Opera Roanoke tryouts
Opera Roanoke will hold regional auditions Jan. 25 at the Jefferson Center, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Artistic Director Craig Fields will hear singers for a variety of principal roles and chorus positions for "La Traviata," "The Magic Flute" and "La Cenerentola."
Accompanists will be available for $15 per auditioner, or auditioners may bring their own accompanist. Auditioners must provide their own music. Appointments are required. Call Bobbie Slough at 982-2742 for information and scheduling.
'People and Railroads'
The Virginia Museum of Transportation will present "People and Railroads - and the Building of America" Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. This event is part of the 1997 Transportation Heritage Informative Series. Call 342-5670.
Collage Magazine
Collage Magazine is taking submissions in the forms of poetry, short prose, or essays. There will be three categories: children, teens, and adults. Teen and adult submissions should be accompanied by a SASE. There are no guidelines for subject matter - variety is encouraged (no vulgarity). First Night Roanoke
First Night Roanoke, the New Year's Eve event of Festival in the Park, needs volunteers Dec. 31 for three-hour shift in such positions as face painting, logistics, concessions, arts and crafts and games. Shifts run 6-9 p.m. or 9 p.m.-midnight, so volunteers will be able to see the celebration. All volunteers receive a free admission button, a drink and a McDonald's hamburger. Elmo auction
Q99 radio and Lowe's are auctioning Tickle Me Elmo dolls. Four will be auctioned Monday and a fifth will be given away. Proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army. The auction is Monday at Lowe's at Towne Square Shopping Center. Registration will be from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., then auctioneer Trae Willis from Nicholls Auction Co. will offer the Tickle Me Elmos to the highest bidders.
