The body of a newborn girl, wrapped in a red golf shirt, was found in a plastic bag hanging from a coat hook, and police said Sunday they had not tracked down the parents or made any arrests.
The infant, believed to have been dead for three to five days, was discovered Saturday by a maintenance worker at the Lillian Vernon distribution center, police said.
The body was found just hours after a bomb threat had forced the building's evacuation. It was unclear, however, if the two incidents were related.
Although the child appeared to be white, police said the body was so decomposed that they could not be certain of its race. The body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Norfolk for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Thurston said police were first called to the distribution center at 2:30 p.m. Saturday after the bomb threat was phoned in. No bomb was found and employees were allowed to return to work.
About an hour later, a maintenance man spotted the white plastic bag hanging from the coat hook. It was in a hallway lined with lockers used by employees.
The man took the bag down, intending to throw it in a trash bin. At the last moment, however, he wondered if the bag might be related to the earlier bomb threat.
With that danger in mind, he took the bag out into the parking lot and gingerly peered inside, police said. When he saw the body he called police.
The red shirt wrapped around the baby was size small, with a Colours label and a crest with the words, ``Sport Athletic Champion'' on the left chest
