ABBOTT, K. Rachael, 83, of Mt. Horeb Rd., Princeton, W.Va., died Sunday, December 22, 1996 in the Harmony House of Athens. Born in Stuart, Va. January 31, 1913 she was the daughter of the late Robert and Kelly Martin Williams. She was nondenominational in her faith. She had been a resident of Princeton since 1959 moving here from Premier, W.Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Early Abbott; one granddaughter, Marla Lawrence Ball; two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Ramona Lawrence and her husband, Marvin of Blacksburg, Va. and Betty Jean Davis and her husband, Harold of Princeton, W.Va.; one son, Ronald Abbott and his wife, Betty Jo of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, Roy Williams and his wife, Vivian of Green Valley. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George W. Seaver Funeral Home Chapel in Princeton, W.Va. with Mr. Mark Peters and Mr. Rick Waller officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

ARNOLD, Marie Jones, 65, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Sunday, December 22, 1996. Funeral 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Barnett Funeral Home.

BAIN, Roger Lee, 50, of Christiansburg, passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996, at his home. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a hydraulic mechanic for Carter Machinery. Survivors include his fiancee, Sherry Keith of Radford; one son, Chad Bain of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Tammy and Randy Pannell of Radford, Kimberly Akers of Christiansburg and Olivia Bain of the home; one grandson, Eric Pannell; one granddaughter, Brittany Akers; his parents, Marshall and Frankie Bain of Radford; one brother, Allen Bain of Childress; one sister, Ethel Lytton of Radford, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 24, 1996, at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, with the Rev. Leon Alley and the Rev. Phillip Martin officiating. BALSER, Jesse Thomas, (``Tommy""), 67, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, December 22, 1996 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born May 30, 1929 son of the late Jesse G. Balser and Mary Camden Balser. He was retired from Ray Magnet Wire in Buena Vista. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Claytor Balser; three sons, Larry D. Balser of Madison Heights, Thomas Brian Balser of Bridgewater, and Jacob Gilmer Balser of Lexington; one daughter, Candace Bane of Glasgow; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joseph ``Butch"" Grow officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. HARRIS, Gail Minter, 53, of Blue Ridge, passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996 at her home. A native of Henry County, Va. she was a daughter of the late Granville E. and Mary Matheny Minter. Gail was a computer programmer and operator for Gardner-Denver, and was previously with Save-A-Stop. Surviving are her husband, E. M. ``Ed"" Harris; three sons, E. M. ``E.J."" Harris Jr., Winter Park, Fla., Kevin E. Harris and his wife, Jeannie Harris of Spartansburg, N.C., Brian E. Harris of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a brother, James R. ``Jim"" Minter, Roanoke. JACKSON, Annie Dickerson, 8 8, of Covington, went to be with her Lord, Saturday night, December 21, 1996. Mrs. Jackson was born February 9, 1908 at Fairfield in Rockbridge County the daughter of the late Dan and Lelia Elliott Dickerson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Covington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel T. Jackson in 1976. Surviving are Mrs. Frances Gill of Roanoke, Mrs. Annie Mae Lanier of Washington D.C., Thomas Dickerson Sr. of Covington; four granddaughters, Mrs. Tecumseh (Terry) Williams of Richmond, Mrs. Monroe (Anita) Gill-Anderson of Herndon, Mrs. Craig (Theresa) Gill-Walker of Wilmington, Del., Miss Angelia Gill of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a grandson, Thomas Dickerson Jr. of Covington; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Eaddy of Washington D.C. and Mrs. Blanche Jackson of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews. JANNEY, John Thomas, 73, of Pembroke, died Saturday morning, December 21, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Giles County, he was a son of the late Herbert and Frances Basham Janney, and was a longtime member of Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church of Hoges Chapel near Pembroke. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Rino Basham, and a sister, Thelma J. Breeding. Surviving are a brother, Charlie Janney of Pembroke; a sister, Elizabeth J. Lafon of Pembroke; many friends, and several nieces and nephews. JOHNSON, Charles Bill Sr., 67, of Pembroke, died Saturday evening, December 21, 1996 at his home. Born in Giles Co., Va. he was a son of the late Wilmer and Minnie Pyles Johnson. Charlie was retired from VPI & SU, was a member of New River Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Martin Johnson; a granddaughter, Regina Lynn Shuff; and two brothers, Lacy and Carl Johnson. A. Flora; her late husband's sister, Dickie Maynihan, and two grandchildren, Will and Leah Jones. LEMON, Mary Madeline Dellis, 54, of 5261 Highway 29 North , Blairs, passed away Sund ay, December 22, 1996 at her residence. She was born February 6, 1942 in Huddleston a daughter of Clarence Lee Dellis and Letha Mae Overstreet Dellis of Huddleston who survive. She was a member of the Blairs Baptist Church. In addition to her mother and father she is survived by her husband, Luther L. Lemon Jr.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie L. and Mark Werner, Wauwatosa, Wisc., Judith L. and Byron Ballard, Front Royal; two brothers, Dennis Lee Dellis, Douglas Wayne Dellis both of Huddleston; five grandchildren. A private graveside service will be conducted at the Palestine Church Cemetery. MANUEL, James Daniel, (``June""), 74, of Wytheville, died Saturday mor ning, December 21, 1996 in the Wythe Co. Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn Manuel Smith. He was retired from the Wytheville Police Dept., and worked part-time for the Gillman Funeral Chapel. He is survived by his wife, Iris Bralley Manuel of Wytheville; his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Nancy Manuel of Wytheville; son-in-law, Jerry Smith of Wytheville; three sisters, Byrd M. Bourne, Mary Lou M. Clemons, and Georgia M. Gillman all of Wytheville; four brothers, Bill Manuel, Jesse Manuel both of Wytheville, Buddy Manuel of Beaufort, S.C. and Lawrence Manuel of Wytheville; three grandchildren. MELTON, James Edward, 63, of 35 Douglas Ave., Dublin, died early Sunday morning, December 22, 1996 in the Radford Community Hospital. Born in Galax, Va. on December 25, 1932 the son of the late William E. Melton and Minnie Felts Melton. He was a veteran in the United States Navy. Mr. Melton recenly retired from Radford University, where he worked as an Air Conditioning Refrigeration Foreman. Since his retirement he has been a master gardener, trout fisherman, and Cougar football fan. He wil be sadly missed by his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Meadows Melton, Dublin; daughter and son-in-law, Sara E. and David H. Sumner, Maryville, Tenn.; sisters, Mae Melton, Ila M. Smith, Grace Melton, Gladys M. NESTER, W. Frank, 90, of Route 4, Vinton and Friendship Manor, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 21, 1996, from Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. He was a member of Barnhardt Baptist Church for over 70 years, where he served as Trustee, Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Sunday School teacher. He was retired from Safety Motor Transit. Mr. Nester was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. J. M. Nester; his wife, Dorothy J. Nester; a son, Paul W. Nester; brothers, Howard Nester and John Nester, and sisters, Ella Bell Worsham and Lois Bradner. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty N. and Thomas E. Sublette Sr. of Goodview; grandchildren, Jeanette S. and husband Mike Atkins, Thomas E. Sublette II, and Guy F. and wife Traci Sublette; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Tommie Nester of Altavista, George Nester of Morganton, N.C., James Nester of Danville and Mack Nester of Nathalie, and sisters, Bettie Moon of Hurt, Virginia Lea of Alexandria and Annie Stevens of Vinton. NUCKOLS, Gussie Simpson, 85, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, December 22, 1996 at the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born March 1, 1911 in Buena Vista, daughter of the late L. B. Simpson and Ocie Simpson Chittum. She was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren and had worked at the Bernson Silk Mill and co-owner of Nuckols Texaco Service Station. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L. Nuckols on January 24, 1994. She is survived by two sisters, Marshella Simpson Anderson and Elsie Simpson Foster both of Buena Vista; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 24, 1996 at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chester Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. SMITH, Alice Oglesby, 81, formerly of Wythe County, died Sunday, December 22, 1996 in Richfield Nursing Center, Salem, Va. Born in Wythe County August 7, 1915 she was the daughter of the late Frank S. Oglesby and Elizabeth Wood Oglesby. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roderick B. Smth. She was a member of Draper Valley Presbyterian Church and had a Masters Degree from V.P.I. in Home Economics. She had worked for Sears in Chicago testing small electronics. She is survived by one sister, Jane O. Luttrell of Roanoke County. Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, in the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Preston O. TAYLOR, Sandra Lee, 35, of Roanoke, departed this life on Sunday, December 22, 1996, in a Salem hospital. She was the daughter of the late Russell Taylor and Elizabeth Rose Taylor. WEDDLE, Wesley Albert, 92, of Floyd, passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. He was a former Deputy Sheriff of Floyd County, having served for 15 years, and was a retired driver for New River Valley Senior Citizens. Mr. Weddle was a longtime member of Topeco Church of the Brethren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Weddle; a daughter, Mary Louise Weddle, and a son-in-law, Joe Pete King. He is survived by a daughter, Betty King of Check; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Fran Weddle of Floyd; a grandson and wife, Douglas and Audra Weddle of Floyd, and a special friend, Eva Sweeney of Floyd. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 24, 1996, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. William Stovall, the Rev. Ralph Spradling and the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Burial will follow in Topeco Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Maberry Funeral Home.

WEEKS, Carl H., 88, of Roanoke, died Sunday, December 22, 1996. Mr. Weeks was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired barber. Mr. Weeks was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Horne Weeks. Surviving are his wife, Bertha Leslie Weeks; a daughter, Anthia Critzer of Waynesboro; a stepdaughter, Barbara Leslie Craighead of Roanoke, and two sisters, Josephine Fulp and Mary Scruggs, both of Roanoke. Also surviving are five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and one stepgrandson. Also, a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 24, 1996, with the Rev. Anthony C. Busic officiating. Interment with military honors by VFW Post #1264 will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Lotz Roanoke Chapel from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

WESTMORELAND, Ivan, 67, of Axton, died Saturday, December 21, 1996. Graveside services 11 a.m. Tuesday, Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. Arrangements by McKee Funeral Service, Martinsville.
