There were times you couldn't get a beer at RFK Stadium. The new Redskins Stadium will have its own microbrewery.
Italian sausage sandwiches were considered haute cuisine at RFK. The menu at the new Redskins Stadium will feature food from around the world and restaurants, restaurants, restaurants.
At RFK Stadium, vendors sold programs, buttons, caps and jerseys standing behind mini-podiums and card tables. The new Redskins Stadium will have stores and kiosks. There will be an interactive Hall of Fame where visitors can watch the history of the Redskins and the NFL unfold.
Best of all, Redskins Stadium will be open and ready in time for the start of the 1997 regular season. Guaranteed.
So says Walter Lynch, project manager of Redskins Stadium. Every day, Lynch watches as 1,000 construction workers file into a tiny Maryland suburb that a year ago had no name and no ZIP code. He watches at night as 700 or so second-shift workers pick up where the day guys left off.
``We work from 7 in the morning until 11 at night,'' Lynch said Friday. ``And we're right on schedule.''
Lynch says the new stadium - located in Raljon, Md., formerly part of Landover - is half-complete. What concrete remains to be poured will be set in 10 days. In February, workers will begin installing 78,600 seats, whether they are located in one of the 280 sky boxes or in the 15,000-seat club area.
``Fans here will be closer to the field,'' Lynch said. ``It will be the best place in the NFL to watch a game.''
