BALSER, Jesse Thomas, (``Tommy""), 67, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, December 22, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday, Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel.

CLEVELAND, Helen S., 76, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996. She was a member of Carrie Lee Chapter #108, Order of the Eastern Star. Helen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother; and is survived by her husband of 55 years, Luther Norvell Cleveland; her sons and daughters-in-law, Randolph (Randy) N. and Dianna Cleveland, Roanoke, Michael (Mike) S. and Debbie Cleveland, Columbia, S.C.; her granddaughters, Christy Michelle and Kelly Elizabeth Cleveland. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel Thursday, December 26, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gene Burris officiating. Interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. An Eastern Star service will be held Wednesday evening, 7:30 p.m. conducted by Carrie Lee Chapter. The family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel.

DILLON, SHERMAN Wayne, (``Sonny""), 61, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 21, 1996. Arrangements by Lotz Vinton Chapel.

FULTON, John Ross, 2-year-old son of Mark A. and Ann Smeltzer Fulton of 12914 Fountain Head Road, Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, December 22, 1996, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was born December 16, 1994, and was baptized in the Chapel of Saint James School. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adna B. Fulton of Boonsboro, Md.; his paternal great-grandfather, Malcolm E. Shaw of Big Pool, Md.; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael K. Smeltzer of Roanoke, Va., and his maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Brownlee of Gainesville, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 26, in the Chapel of Saint James School, with the Rev. Fr. Stuart S. Dunnan officiating. Private burial services will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Pediatrics Hematology Division of Johns Hopkins University Hospital, 600 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore, Md. 21287. HAIRSTON, Mae Lee, 74, of Pa rk Avenue, Hopewell, died Sunday, December 22, 1996, in Columbia John Randolph Hospital. She was born in Petersburg and had been a resident of this area all of her life. Mrs. Hairston was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late John Edward and Nonie Mann Cagle, and the widow of Joe Watkins Hairston. Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth B. Overby of Sutherland; a son, H. Stanley Bishop of Prince George County; four grandsons, Michael Lampman and Mark Lampman of Chester, and Jason Bishop and Brett Bishop of Prince George County, and two brothers, Charles H. Cagle of New York, N.Y., and John E. Cagle of Chesapeake. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 27, 1996, in Appomattox Cemetery, Hopewell, with the Rev. David Wade, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. KELLY, Frances E., 79, of Lexington, was gently called home to heaven by her Master on Monday, December 23, 1996. Frances was born in Fort Worth, Texas and was a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., and was the wife of the late RAdm. James W. Kelly. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith Love Davis. Frances was an active and dedicated member of Neriah Baptist Church in Buena Vista, Va. She taught Sunday School and served joyfully as their pianist. For several years she was also active with Goshen Baptist Church. Her energy and devotion to her churches and her Saviour were steadfast and true. Frances is survived by four children, Ruth Kelly Tweedy, Fla., James Morton Kelly, Alexandria, Miles Dawson Kelly, Lexington, and Ann Marie Kelly, Lexington; eight granddaughters, Kelly B. Morin, Christine M. McCotter, Kerry D. Davis, Emily L. Kelly, Sara K. Kelly, Julia M. Kelly, Alana L. Schwan, and Lindsay P. Kelly. A memorial service will be held at Neriah Baptist Church on Friday, December 27, 1996 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jill Y. Crainshaw officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Neriah Baptist Church in Buena Vista, Va. or Goshen Baptist Church in Goshen, Va. Surely the earth is not as bright without the light Frances shined on all who knew and loved her, but now the heavens glow even more brilliantly with the homecoming celebration of this special Christian lady. TATUM, Harry Benton, (``Ben""), 50, of Route 3, Sheffield Terrace in Ridgeway, died of brain cancer on Monday, December 23,1996 at his home. Born June 4, 1946 in Stuart, Virginia, he was a son of the late Tom Benton Tatum and Katherine Cox Tatum. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Benton Tatum. An Air Force veteran, he was stationed in Grand Forks, North Dakota and Sembach, Germany from 1966 - 1970. He married the former Barbara Bell of Grand Forks on June 25, 1969, in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He worked as a service technician for Sprint-Centel for 26 years, primarily in the Bachelor's Hall, Whitmell, and Ridgeway areas. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, and a former member of Ridgeway Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Bell Tatum, of the home; three sons, Neil David Tatum, Craig Matthew Tatum and Jon Andrew Tatum, all of the home; his mother, Katherine Cox Tatum of Ridgeway; one brother, Joseph Kenneth Tatum of Vinton; two sisters, Judy Tatum Hale of Daleville and Mary Elizabeth Tatum Smith of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1901 Patrick Henry Avenue, Martinsville, Virginia, with Dr. Dwight O. Christenbury officiating and the Rev. Jon Martin assisting. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Ridgeway, Virginia, with military rites by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County. Pallbearers will be Lynn Reynolds, Milton Collinsworth, Gary Brown, Bill Murphy, Doc Altizer, Chett Bason, Tommy Wright, and Mike Livengood. Honorary pallbearers will be outside plant employees of Sprint-Centel. The family will receive friends at the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund or to Hospice of memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Norris Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

TAYLOR, Andrew Truby, 83, of Dublin, passed away Monday, December 23, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday, Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

TAYLOR, Hampton Hogue, 94, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, December 20, 1996. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, the late Juber Early and Ida Taylor. Mr. Taylor is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Ruth Ann Dearing Taylor, of the home; two sons, James H. (Elizabeth) Taylor and Douglas J. (Brenda) Taylor, and four daughters, Orelia Bolden, Phyllis Haynes, Tallulah Taylor and Carolyn Jones, all of Roanoke; two brothers, Tom (Christine) Taylor and Will Taylor, both of Franklin County; sisters-in-law, Ophelia (Herbert) Muse of Roanoke and Ann Dearing of Baltimore, Md., Mary Dearing, Kentucky; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 26, at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cedric Malone and the Rev. J. D. Holland officiating. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. TAYLOR, Sandra Lee, 35, of Roanoke, departed this life on Sunday, December 22, 1996, in a Salem hospital. She was the daughter of the late Russell Taylor and Elizabeth Rose Taylor. Survivors include two sisters, Shirley (Harvey) Pannell and Mary Washington, and two brothers, James Taylor and Earl Dooley, all of Roanoke; one aunt, Alberta Divers of Washington, D.C., and other relatives. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, with the Rev. Eddie Crabtree officiating. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Par k. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services at Hamlar-Curtis.

TRIVITT, John Blaine, 88, of Clintwood, died Sunday, December 22, 1996, at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. He was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County. A 1933 graduate of VPI, he was a former Dickenson County school teacher. Before his retirement, he owned and operated Home Hardware and Furniture Company for over 30 years. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Dominion Bank. Mr. Trivitt was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley B. and Lea Mullins Trivitt, and his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Pack Trivitt. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Betty Jo) Quesenberry of Pulaski, Mrs. Mac (Sue Carole) Clarke of Suffolk and Mrs. Bert (Mary Lea) Byer of Kingsport, Tenn.; three brothers, Dr. James Carl Trivitt of Fremont, Ohio, Dr. Wiley Burn Trivitt of Glendon, N.C., and Harold Trivitt of Grundy; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services for John Blaine Trivitt will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Clintwood United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating. Entombment will follow in the family cemetery at Route 2, Clintwood. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Thursday at the Clintwood Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services. Active pallbearers will be Tim Redden, Zack Mullins, Roy Mullins, Leman Kendrick, Roy Fletcher and Ike Bryant. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Robinson, Doug Hawkins, Tolby Mooney, Clarence Wright Jr., Larry Mullins and Donald Robinson. WALKER, Larma Frances, 56, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996, at her home. She is survived by her son, Michael Talley of Goodview; her mother, Edith DeHart Smith of Roanoke, and her sister, Pamela Shaeffer of Vinton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 26, 1996, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel in Floyd, with Pastor Ted Smart officiating. Burial will be in Greasy Creek Cemetery at Willis. The family will receive friends one hour before service time at Maberry Funeral Home.

WASSOM, Nancy Bell, 90, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke and Wytheville, died Saturday, December 21, 1996. She is survived by her brother, John T. Wassom of Richmond; her sister-in-law, Betty Cornett Wassom; a nephew, Jack Wassom; nieces, Betty W. Champlin and Sally Wassom; a great-nephew, John Champlin, and a great-niece, Katherine Wassom. Miss Wassom was retired from U.S. Fidelity and Guaranty Company, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Roanoke. Graveside services will be held in Holston Cemetery, Emory, at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian.
