ARNOLD, Mary Bush, 85, of Roanoke and formerly of Covington, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 1996. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

BALLA, Michael, (``Mickey""), 81, of 3712 Cambria Street, Lynchburg, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on June 4, 1915, he was a son of the late John Balla and Mary Evans Balla, and was the husband of Irene H. Balla. Mr. Balla was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, and was a retired mail clerk with the U.S. Postal Service. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and her husband, Peggy and Bill Golden of Moneta, and twin grandsons, Clark and Aaron. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Spring Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. John A. Siegle officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at their residence, 3217 Cambria Street. The family suggests that memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

BROWN, Graham Baxter, 80, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996. Arrangements by Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

CONKLIN, Madeline Constable, 83, of Huddleston, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 1996, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born August 12, 1913, a daughter of the late Frank Stanley Constable and Daisy May Carter Constable. Her husband was the late Uraldean B. Conklin. She was a retired clerk with the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Washington, D.C., and was a member of the Smith Mountain Fire Belles. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Helen Sari of Manassas, and a niece, Donna Bagley of Huddleston. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, December 27, 1996, at 11 a.m., from Bethlehem United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Elizabeth Talbot. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends during a luncheon at Saunders Volunteer Fire Department. DILLON, SHERMAN Wayne, (``Sonny""), 61, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996. Arrangements by Lotz Vinton Chapel.

DOBYNS, Wilma Gemelia Carter, 72, of 6187 Cleburne Blvd., Dublin, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. She was born in St. Charles on February 11, 1924, and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Franklin Carter of Kingsport, Tenn. Ms. Dobyns was a member of Dublin United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Dublin Garden Club in the Southwest District. Ms. Dobyns attained a State Life Membership and a National Life Membership in the Federation of Garden Clubs. She had also earned a degree as a Master Judge. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Ralph (Theda) Wexler of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one brother, Oscar Franklin Carter Jr. of Kingsport, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Terry Blair, and Theda and Larry Gilmore, all of Dublin, and four grandchildren, Margaret Jane Blair Hurst, Martha Anne Blair, Garland Mitchell Gilmore and Laura Nicole Gilmore, all of Dublin. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 26, 1996, in the New Dublin Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Patterson and the Rev. Ben Trawick officiating. The church (New Dublin Presbyterian Church) will be open for visitation at 11 a.m., with the family receiving friends from 12 noon until the service hour. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Free Memorial Library in Dublin, Pulaski County Rescue Squad, the Mission Fund of New Dublin Presbyterian Church or to the Mission Fund of Dublin United Methodist Church. JOHNSON, Raymond Berkley, (""Buck""), 72, of Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996, at Eldercare of Franklin County. He was born August 6, 1924, a son of the late Roy and Annie Oakes Johnson. Mr. Johnson was the retired manager of Mountain View Market, Roanoke. Surviving are two brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Bernice Johnson, Rocky Mount, Doug and Ernestine Johnson, Glade Hill; two nieces, Michelle Johnson, Sue Secrist; one nephew, Gary Johnson; specia l friends, Jessie Rickmond and Vernon Bradford. KITCHEN, Jeanette Johnston, 78, a resident of Fredericksburg, and formerly of Glade Spring, died Sunday, December 22, 1996, in Mary Washington Hospital. She was a native of Abingdon, former secretary at Emory an d Henry College, and retired administrator assistant at Kent State University. She was a former member of Abingdon United Methodist Church, and was the widow of Ralph H. Kitchen. Survivors include two nieces, Anne Bunts McCall of Culpeper and Jean Johnston of Roanoke, and one nephew, Wayne Johnston of Roanoke. Graveside services for Mrs. Jeanette Johnston Kitchen will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Knollkreg Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dr. Larry J. Ousley officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 1097, Abingdon, Va. 24212-1097. LOFLAND, Mabel Rogers, 100, of Roanoke, died at her home on Monday, December 23, 1996. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl Adams Lofland; a daughter, Frances Wright; sons, Frank Lofland and Carl Lofland; a sister, Lois Wheeler, and granddaughters, Caroline Lofland and Julia Wright. MATTHEWS, Henry Mason, Sr., 64, of Roanoke, died Monday, December 23, 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and two sons, Henry Matthews Jr. and Kevin Matthews. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and is survived by his wife, Maxine Matthews; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Daniel L. and Carol Matthews of Anderson, S.C., and Joel W. Matthews of Roanoke; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia M. and Todd Smith of Salem, and Rachel M. and Jason Markham of Buchanan; two sisters, Lois A. Franeck of Cleveland, Ohio, and Shirley Nottingham of Proctorville, Ohio, and three stepgrandchildren, Stacy, Mendy and Trevor. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 26, 1996, in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Charles Watkins officiating. MILLER, Carl McClung, (``Speck""), of Lexington, died of cancer on Tuesday, December 24, 1996, at his residence. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and United Virginia Bank (Crestar). He served in General Patton's Third Army, 16th Armored Division, in World War II. Mr. Miller was a charter member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lexington, where he had served as treasurer for 24 years, on the Church Council for a number of terms, and was currently a Trustee and member of the choir. He had remained active as long as his health permitted. Mr. Miller was born on June 13, 1914, a son of the late Amos Monroe and Effie Lindsay Miller, and also was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Edna Moomaw Miller; a daughter, Mary Ann Wates of White Post; a son, Carl Richard Miller of Linden; three grandchildren, Tim J. Currier of Fairfax, Robin C. and husband Tom Passino of Reston and Trevor Beth Miller of Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother and sister-in-law, Melvin A. and Mildred J. Miller of Richmond; one sister and brother-in-law, Clara M. and Stephen W. Fotis of San Antonio, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lexington at 11 a.m. Friday, December 27, with the Rev. Brian Peterson, pastor, officiating. MUMFORD, Mabel J., 90, of Friendship Health Care Center in Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 23, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry A. Mumford, and a grandson, Dale Logan Pearson of Salem. She is survived by a daughter, Carolee K. Pearson of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Pam and husband Johnny Scott of Callaway; three great-grandsons, Brian and wife Terry Scott of R oanoke, Zak and wife Sonja Scott of Salem and Charles Scott of Callaway; two great-great-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, and two brothers. SHORDT, Peter Henry, 79, of Willis, passed away Monday, December 23, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Surviving are his wife, Jeanette Lillian Shordt of Willis; one daughter, Kathl een Shordt of The Hague, Netherlands; one brother, Clement Richard Shordt of Toledo, Ohio; one granddaughter, Maya Shordt; two nephews, Robert Shordt and Michael Shordt; one niece, Patricia Intagliata; six great-nieces, and four great-nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, December 27, 1996, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel in Floyd, with the Rev. Bryan Childress officiating. VanLUIK, John W., 80, of Chesapeake, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996, at his residence. Mr. VanLuik was born in Hoboken, N.J., and was the son of the late John and Pleuentje Pols VanLuik. He had retired as a field representative with Southern States Cooperative after 18 years of service. Mr. VanLuik was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Administrative Board, a Trustee, and a member of the Finance and Long Range Planning committees. He also was a member of Coastal Canoeists and an Eagle Scout. Survivors include his wife, Edna Eaton VanLuik; a daughter, Sandra C. VanLuik of Lewisburg, W.Va.; a son, John E. VanLuik and his wife, Linda of Roanoke, and a sister, Nellie Potts of Richmond. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 27, 1996, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. W. Roberts McIvor and the Rev. Jack Scott. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
