ARNOLD, Mary Bush, 85, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, December 24,1996 in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Arnold and a daughter, Harriett Palmer Parker. Mrs. Arnold was a member of Ghent Grace Brethren Church. Surviving are her daughter and her husband, Patty and Robbie Lane, Roanoke; six grandchildren, Chris McDonald, Eric Plott, Cameron Lane, Melodee Moser, Rick Parker, and Gary Parker; eight great-gr andchildren; and a son-in-law, Dick Parker, Brazil. A cryptside service will be 1 p.m. Friday, December 27, 1996, at the Mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Gardens, near Covington, Va. Mr. G. Wayne McDonald will officiate. CARBAUGH, Margaret Ellen Neel, 97, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Carbaugh, daughter, Rachel Delphine Miller, granddaughters, Joyce Ellen Carbaugh and Pamela Annette Bashaw. Mrs. Carbaugh was born April 4, 18 99, a daughter of John Edward Neel and Mary Jane Yost Neel. She was a member of the South Roanoke United Methodist Church. Survivors include six sons, Carl, George, Robert, and Lewis, all of Roanoke, William E. of Prince George, and James E. of Connecticut; five daughters, Dorothy C. Brown, Margaret C. Bashaw and Jean C. Whitehurst, all of Roanoke, Sibyl C. Matson, Betty C. Atkins, both of North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. HILL, John Wesley, (``John Billy""), 76, of Glasgow, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996 at his home. Mr. Hill was born July 16, 1920 in Naola, Va. a son of the lat e Joseph Paxton Hill and Emma Trevey Hill. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during World War II, and retired from Burlington Ind. after 43 years. Mr. Hill was a member of the Glasgow Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Claudine Roberts Hill, Glasgow; two sons, John Wesley Hill Jr., Charlotte, N.C., Stephen Wayne Hill, Glasgow; one brother,H. Ward Hill, Lincoln, Neb.; seven grandchildren. HOWARD, Frank Bigelow, 77, longtime resident of 127 7th St., N. W., Pulaski, died in Pulaski Community Hospital on Wednesday, December 25, 1996. He was the son of the late William Welch Howard and Bertha Currier Howard. He was a former vestry member of Christ Episcopal Church, a retired employee of the C & P Telephone Company of Virginia and a U. S. Army veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, May Elkins Howard; two daughters and a son-in-law, James and Jill Howard Sandidge, Pulaski, Alyson Darst Vordermark, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Sally Anne Sandidge and michael Howard Sandidge, both of Pulaski, Jonathan Darst Vordermark, Hampden-Sydney and Matthew T. Vordermark, VMI, Lexington; two brothers, William Franklin Howard, Fairfax, Va., and Charles Currier Howard, Columbus, Ga.; a sister, Elizabeth Darst Adkinson, St. Petersburg, Fla. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Roberta and Paul Bigler of Roanoke, and Carol and James White of Thaxton; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Alma Kinzie of Big Cove Tannery, Pa.; six sisters, Clara Rockwood of Franklin, Mass., Christine Ballew of Roanoke, Lois Young of Roanoke, Lottie Turner of Crystal Lake, Ill., Gerri Mills of Roanoke and Maxine Abshire of Normal, Ill.; a friend, Eula Kinzie of Hampton; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. SHEAFFER, Rev. William Morgan, 77, of 1103 Randolph Ave., Pulaski, died Monday, December 23, 1996 at his home. He was born in Clifton Forge, Va. on February 1, 1919 and was the son of the late Robert S. Sheaffer and Mae Morgan Sheaffer Nelson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Aubrey E. Sheaffer and by a sister, Anita Sheaffer Cornett. Rev. Sheaffer completed his undergraduate work at the University of Richmond Virginia in 1948. He completed his graduate work at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, Rochester, N.Y., where he was awarded the Master of Divinity degree in 1951. He served as Combat Platoon Leader with the 82nd, 13th and 17th Airborne Divisions during WWII in Europe. Upon his graduation from the seminary in 1951, he returned to the 82nd Airborne Division as Chaplain of the 504th Infantry Regiment. In 1952 he became the first Chaplain in history to participate in a parachute jump with the 504th in an area where an atomic device had just been exploded at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada, and became known as the unofficial Atomic Chaplain of the U. S. Army. Rev. Sheaffer served the 145th AAA Battalion 45th Infantry Division as Chaplain in Korea Far East Command from 1952 to 1954, where he was a warded the Bronze Star for Valor and Meritorious Service. He retired in 1974 upon completion of 14 years of service, with Monroe County Department of Social Services, Rochester, N. Y. He was a member of the Genesee Valley Association, New York Conference, The United Church of Christ. Surviving are his sister, Armita S. Amburn, Pulaski; stepmother, Ruth Sheaffer, Bristol, Va.; half sisters, Ilene Hill, Dondra Wright and Diane Sharret, all of Bristol, Va.; half brother, Billy Keith, Bristol, Va. Also surviving are beloved nieces and nephews. Rev. Sheaffer, in September 1993, signed the ``Instrument of Anatomical Gift - Declaration of Intent"", requesting that upon his death, his remains be donated to the Anatomical Division, Virginia Department of Health for Medical Research and Scientific Study. His abiding faith and prayerful hope was that some contribution be made to the alleviation of human suffering. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 27, 1996 at 11 a.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, Va. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
