THE FAMILY SERVICE ESSAY CONTEST winners for this year have been announced: Whitney Walker, Roanoke Academy for Mathematics and Science; Jasmine Little, Fairview World of Plants and Animals Elementary Magnet School; Ann Winifred Barrows, Crystal Spring Elementary School; David Ryan, Raleigh Court Elementary School; Kayla Elmore, Morningside Elementary School; Brianna Young, Monterey Elementary School; Peter Evans, Fishburn Park WEB Magnet School; Latameeka Deane, Forest Park New American School; and Jessica Lipford, Hurt Park Elementary.
The essay contest is open to fourth-graders in public and private schools in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. This year's topic was, "Why my family is special."
MARTHA GWEN SIBERT, a chemistry teacher at the Governor's School, was awarded the Region VI Teacher of the Year Award. Sibert was honored for her excellence in teaching, her commitment to trying new teaching strategies, and her work in staff development.
FORD MOTOR CREDIT CO. recently announced that several Roanoke-area 11th-and 12th-graders were winners in its "Credit Drives America" Contest.
The "Best of Contest" winners were Joy Monar and Jennifer Eenigenburg, both from Patrick Henry High School. Semifinalists were Lynda Phan and Brandi Dooley, of Patrick Henry High School, and Jamila Smith and Jerome Ferrell, of William Fleming High School.
The contest was open to all 11th-and 12th-grade students in Roanoke, Salem and Vinton public schools. Each of the 70 contestants wrote an essay or created a poster on the topic "Why is good credit so important?" Only two essays and two posters could be submitted from each high school for final judging.
NATHAN THOMAS WEBSTER of Roanoke has been named to the Headmaster's List for the first trimester at Blue Ridge School near Charlottesville. Webster is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Webster.
