Tim Frazier was asleep in his trailer in Alleghany Trailer Park this month when an alarm went off. After sleepily slapping at his alarm clock, Frazier realized the beeping was coming from his smoke detector.
Frazier escaped from the trailer, but just moments before it was engulfed in flames. The fire, started by a kerosene heater, was so intense that it warped vinyl shades in the trailer next door before it was put out by the Fire Department.
To save lives, the Blacksburg Fire Department and Raines Real Estate are offering smoke detectors to area residents who don't have them.
Anyone who does not have a detector or knows someone who doesn't have one can contact the Fire Department at 961-1175 or send e-mail to bvfd@bev.net.
