Theater seeks young actors

Mill Mountain Theatre will hold auditions for young people age 8-17 on Jan. 18 beginning at 10 a.m.

Roles to be cast for the upcoming production of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" include dwarfs, woodland creatures and dancing magic mirrors. Auditioners are asked to prepare a song and a short, memorized poem or monologue.

Different ages, heights and ethnic backgrounds are needed.

Museum seeks

volunteers

The Virginia Museum of Transportation is seeking volunteers to aid in the restoration of some of its artifacts, including locomotives, automobiles, and trucks.

"Restoration Kick '97" days will be held Jan. 25, Feb. 22 and March 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum. No previous restoration experience is necessary.

Museum announces

1997 events

The Virginia Museum of Transportation has announced its Special Events schedule for 1997: "Structures," an exhibit that explores the relationship between engineering and architectural form, opens Jan. 25 and will continue through April 5. On Feb. 6, Professor Theodore Kornwibel Jr. will give a lecture focusing on African-American railroad heritage, "Box Cars on my Mind.'' "Model Mania" and the annual Spring Railfair will be held May 3. The Museum will feature a monthlong exhibit, "Where There is Smoke There is Fire," in July.

Highlights are: "Harness, Hoofbeats, and Silver Bells: American Sleighs and Carriages" in January and February; Soap Box Derby Special Exhibit and Workshop on June 7 and 8; "Wheels of Dreams" in August; a special Halloween Event on Oct. 31; "Choppers, Rice Burners, and Hogs," will display antique and new motorcycles in November; and December will bring "In High Style," an exhibit featuring the Rolls Royce.

Ballet company

to hold auditions

The Roanoke Ballet Theatre will hold auditions for its dance company and apprentice company Jan. 11 at its Jefferson Center studio.

Ballet auditions will be 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and modern auditions will take place 12:30-1:30 p.m. Dancers may audition in both styles.

Ages 12 and up may audition for the dance company and ages 9-12 may audition for the apprentice company.

Museum seeks

display items

The Virginia Museum of Transportation is seeking carriages, sleighs, buggies and other horse-drawn vehicles for display in its exhibit, "Harness, Hoofbeats, and Silver Bells," on view Jan. 11-Feb. 28. The Museum is seeking the loan of any restored horse-drawn vehicle from the 1850s to the 1930s, and any publications, artifacts or equipment relating to American carriage manufacture, craftsmanship, or travel.
