A convicted murderer has escaped from the District of Columbia's Lorton Prison in southern Fairfax County, police said Thursday.
Thomas Wilkes, 36, was found to be missing about midnight.
Wilkes was serving a 30-year-to-life sentence for second-degree murder while armed. He was being held at the prison's Occoquan facility, which has been locked down by corrections officials, WTTG-TV reported.
Wilkes has been jailed since May 1989.
He is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 215 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.
