1 - Go biking now
So you got a new bike for Christmas. Or maybe your New Year's resolution is to get more exercise in the great outdoors.
Either way, there are a couple of opportunities to pedal into 1997 on New Year's Day. Mountain bikers will be celebrating the seventh annual Big Lick HillBillies ride at Carvins Cove. Participants should meet 12:15 p.m. at the boat-dock parking lot. Riders of all skill levels are welcome. The longest ride will be 23 miles, but there are opportunities for shorter rides. Helmets are required.
The Blue Ridge Bicycle Club will hold its annual President's Day Ride, beginning 10 a.m. Wednesday. Meet at the Forum Shopping Center at Virginia 419 and Starkey Road. The club president, Billie Abshire, is the leader, 343-7632.
4 - List some birds
Bird-watchers will hit several of the best birding spots in the region Saturday during a full day of activities sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Bird Club. The program has been planned so you can spend the entire day or part of it looking for a variety of species. Jumping-off times and spots will be 8 a.m. at the Kroger parking lot at Williamson and Peters Creek roads, 9:30 a.m. at Woodpecker Ridge in Troutville and 10:45 a.m. at the Daleville Western Sizzlin. Check with the coordinator, Tad Finnell, for the details, 473-1271.
5 - Archers go inside
Archers are moving out of the woods to join indoor leagues. Sherwood Archers will have a league organization meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday at its range near Hanging Rock. League competition will begin the next day and continue for 10 weeks. There is space for six teams Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Would-be participants unable to attend the meeting should contact Jerry Tice, 890-1775, or Dennis Mitchell, 981-0647, before the meeting.
The club also will hold several open indoor shoots, beginning noon to 3 p.m. Jan.11. Information is available from Jimmy Brugh, 254-2490.
15 - Cooking a goose
Virginia has scheduled its first late Canada goose hunting season Jan.15 through Feb.8. One of its purposes is to trim the expanding population of resident Canada geese and to offer recreation while doing it. To participate, hunters must register by calling 800-938-5263 (1-888 44WETLAND if you use a rotary phone). You will be asked to supply your six-digit hunting license number. Be prepared to write down instructions.
24 - Big on bass
The Bassarama is called ``the world's most exciting fishing show.'' It certainly is the biggest in Virginia and offers building after building of bass boats and bass tackle, along with seminars from pros, including Woo Daves and Denny Brauer.
The annual show is Jan.24-26 at the Virginia State Fairgrounds in Richmond. The hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day, except the last, when it closes at 5 p.m. Admission is $7, but enthusiasts 16 and younger will be admitted free.
