A story Wednesday incorrectly reported that Vinton does not have a Christmas tree recycling program. The town's public works department will begin picking up trees Monday. Residents are asked to put trees in their normal trash pickup location. Mulch from the trees will be available at the public works building on Third Street. For information, call 983-0646.
Beginning early this month, unwanted Christmas trees will collected by local governments in the Roanoke Valley.
During regular trash collection days Monday through Jan. 17, the city of Roanoke will collect trees on the curb, not in alleys, to be recycled into mulch. The mulch will be available, free of charge, by early February at the corner of Courtland Avenue and Carver Road, behind the Civic Center Pizza Hut, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Roanoke County will also collect trees to be mulched, Jan. 13 through 17, on regular trash days.
Mulch can be picked up at the transfer station at the corner of Virginia 460 and Hollins Road.
Salem and Vinton do not have Christmas tree recycling programs but will pick up trees on regular trash collection days to be taken to the landfill.
Christmas trees should be stripped of decorations and tinsel before pickup.
