LEWIS, Robert Junior, of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, December 1996, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Gevendin Pritchett Lewis; and daughters, Ymelda and Megan Lewis of Cary, N. C., and Coakley G. Lewis of Richmond, Va. He is survived by two brothers, Spencer Lewis of Baltimore, Md. and James A. Lewis of Washington, D.C. Mr. Lewis was a member of the Williams Memorial Baptist Church and held the following positions; Trustee Board member and Financial Secretary. He was a Contract Administrator and Project Manager in the Drive Systems Department of the General Electric Company in Salem, Va. He was an Honorably Discharged veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Lewis graduated from Virginia Western Community College and Radford University, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. Mr. Lewis is survived by a host of family and friends scattered in the states of Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia. The family will receive visitors and friends at the home of the deceased, 1566 Golfside Ave., N. W. The memorial service will be conducted at the Williams Memorial Baptist Church on January 2, 1997 at 1 p.m. Inurnment will be private. MARSHALL, Mary Henry 89, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 30,1996 She was a member Virginia Heights Baptist Church since 1938 and served as President of the W.M.U. and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Mrs. Marshall was a member of the U.D.C., the Thursday Morning Music Club and the Raleigh Court Civic League. She was a former member of the Hill & Dale Garden Club and the Salem Woman's Club. Mrs. Marshall was the widow of Thomas Shackleford Marshall and is survived by a brother, Frank W. Henry of Copper Hill, Va; two sisters, Dulcie Parmele of Collinsville; Aurelia Caruthers of Springfield; a stepson, Charles G. Marshall of Annapolis, Md.; a stepdaughter, Frances Wade of Winston Salem, N.C.; a special nephew, Buddy Lorleberg of Floyd; a special niece, Elizabeth Stone of Copper Hill; and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 3, 1997 from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Dr. Daniel E. Scott and Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. MARTIN, Pattie Lee, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 30, 1996. Survivors include two foster children, Betty Garnes and Edward Penn, Jr., both of Ridgeway; a very special niece, Dorothy Christian; nephews, Sam Christian, Frank Christian and Russell Christian; niece, Sallie (Marvin) Burris, all of Roanoke; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. The Rev. Solomon Pettiford will officiate, with interment in Williams Memorial Park. MILLER, Jean Mason, 51, of Brooklyn, N. Y., formerly of Roanoke Va. , died Monday, December 30, 1996 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Carpenter; and is the daughter of Ethel and John Miller, Roanoke; and is also survived by her daughter, Jane Mason McManus, Brookl yn, N.Y.; her sister and brother-in-law, Jane Miller and Robert Colby, Larchmont, N.Y.; her niece and namesake, Jean Miller Colby, Larchmont, N.Y.; also an uncle and aunt, Phil and Marty Mason, Blacksburg, Va. and Mary Stuart Mason, Richmond, Va.; she also leaves a number of special cousins. Jean graduated from Bryn Mawr College, and held an MBA from James Madison University and did Doctoral work at the University of Nebraska. REED, Frank E., 73, of Christiansburg, a Pearl Harbor Veteran, Army Medic, stationed at Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, died of congestive heart failure on Friday, December 27, 1996 at the home of his daughter in Centreville, Va. Mr. Reed was employed with the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board Regulator Division for 42 years and served as State Director of the Division until his retirement in 1987. He was a native Virginian, born in Floyd County on May 5, 1924. He and his wife made their home iin Christiansburg and he was a member of the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Edith C. Reed; a daughter, Terry Jo Reed Ortiz; one son, Mark Jonathan Reed; son-in-law, Jose' V. Ortiz; daughter-in-law, Patricia Shaw Reed; grandsons, Lindsey Victor Ortiz, Matthew Todd Reed; granddaughter, Rebecca Ann Reed, all of Northern Va.; two brothers, Moyer A. Reed and Grover A. Reed, of Oregon; and many nieces, nephewsand dear friends. A second son, Lindsey Todd Reed preceeded Mr. Reed in death on February 8, 1969. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 1997 from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Don Makin. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. ROBERTSON, Thelma Meador, 97, of Vinton, passed away Monday, December 30, 1996. She was the widow of W. E. Robertson, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Maggie Meador; a sister, Mamie Dowdy; and a brother, Howard Meador. She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Lyon Weaver; and five grandchildren and their spouses, Terry and Linda Lyon, Vinton, Marsha and James Garrison, Christiansburg, Ellen and John Flowers, Roanoke, Jan and Mathew Fitzpatrick, Roanoke, Rob and Carolyn Lyon, Vinton; also ten great-grandchildren, Amy and Jimmy Lyon, Anne and Clint Garrison, Marshall Luke and Hannah Flowers, Kara and Laura Fitzpatrick, and Tyler Lyon. She is also survived by her stepsister, Margaret Harvey and sisters-in-law, Alma Meador, Lexington, Bertha Robertson and Carolyn Robertson, Roanoke; and sister and brother-in-law, Nita and Jesse Pollard, Conynham, Penn., and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are a step-granddaughter and her husband, Debra Weaver Gelberg and Jon, and step-great grandchildren, Michael and Robert Gelberg, North Caldwell, N.J. She was a long-time member of the Vinton Baptist Church and a former employee of Heironimus for twenty-two years. She was greatly loved by family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 2:30 p.m. Thursday, January 2, with the Revered Dr. William L. Ross officiating, assisted by Reverend Kevin Meadows. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Vinton Baptist Church. SHRADER, Thomas Leonard Sr., 86, of Salem, died Monday, December 30, 1996. He was retired from Fralin and Waldron and also from Aaron J. Conner. Mr. Shrader was an army Air Corps. Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Mildred Dunn Shrader; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Jr. and Sharon Shrader; grandchildren, Angela Shrader and Joshua Shrader; a sister, Madalon Shrader, all of Roanoke; a brother, Lewis C. Shrader, Son City, Calif.; and numer ous nieces and nephews. SIGMON, Ruby Sloan, of Rocky Mount, formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996, at her residence. Mrs. Sloan was a hairdresser at S. H. Heironimus Department Store for many years. She was the widow of Raymond Wallace Sigmon. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Tonia and Jose Camina, Southern Pines, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Autrey and Polly Sigmon, Cullman, Ala; six grandchildren, Teran, Savin and Lily Camina, and Stephanie, Melanie and Todd Sigmon; her mother, Maude C. Sloan, Ferrum; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nell and Jack Russell, Danville, Sylbia and Jesse Wray, Rocky Mount. SMILEY, Dorothy Nixon, 80, of Glasgow Va., died Monday, December 30,1996, at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. Mrs. Smiley was born on April 1, 1916 in Nelson Co., and was the daughter of the late Samuel Joseph Nixon and Annie Eliza Moxley Nixon. She was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Glasgow, a former member of The Rockbridge Order of Eastern Star Chapter 125 and served as the past worthy Matron, a charter member of Rockbridge Woman's Club, ALTAR Chairperson at the Church, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department. She was the widow of Morris L. Smiley. Mrs. Smiley is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Morris L. and Hilda Smiley, Jr., Glasgow; one sister, May N. Stinson, Glasgow; one brother, Franklin Nixon, Sr., Glasgow; two grandchildren, Lisa T. Adam, St. Louis, Mo. and Scott Smiley, Lexington; and two great-grandchildren. SMILEY, Lillian Beatrice, 81, of Route 5, Lexington, died Thursday, December 19,1996 at the Shenandoah V alley Health Care Center, Buena Vista. She was born in Rockbridge County on October 14, 1915, a daughter of the late Eli W. Carter and Gertrude Huffman Carter. Mrs. Smiley had been employed by Burlington Industries as a secretary for fifteen years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. Smiley. Survivors include four stepdaughters, Dorothy Horne and Margaret Smiley, both of Glasgow, Jane Brongo, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Parker, Richmond; a sister, Kathleen C. Staton, Buena Vista; and one stepgranddaughter, Joan Katz, Coconut Creek, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 21, 1996, at 3 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. William C. Crites officiating. SPICER, Harold L., 78, of Salem, died Monday, December 30, 1996. He was born in Sterling, N. J. and had been a resident of N.J. until 1983 when he retired and moved to Salem, Va. He was a member of St. Paul's Ep iscopal Church in Salem and was a Navy World War II Veteran. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marjorie Spicer; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Dida Spicer, Ga.; a daughter, Wendy Beaver, Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Moriah, Noah and Esther; brother and sister-in-law, A. Douglas and Katherine Spicer; sister and brother-in-law, Hope and James Dunlap. A Requiem Eucharist Service will be held on Friday, January 3, 1997 at noon from St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert D. Copenhaver officiating. A gathering of friends will follow in the Parrish Hall. TOMLIN, Blanche Breeden, 79, of Buena Vista, died Monday, December 30, 1996. Born May 4, 1917 in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late James F. and Carrie Sprouse Breeden. She was a member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Walter Henry Tomlin, Buena Vista; three daughters, Doris Harris, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mary Frances McNemar, Winchester, Ky. and Kathie Hutton, Beckley, W. Va.; a son, Ralph Tomlin, Spartanburg, S.C.; a sister, Marcella Hubbard, Orlando, Fla.; three brothers, Richard Breeden and Robert Breeden, both of Buena Vista, and Lyle Breeden, Boonesboro, Va.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. WELLS, Maurice Edward, born July 2, 1918, to the late Samuel Wells and the late Emma Forrest Wells, departed this life on Monday, December 30, 1996, at his residence in Goode at the age of 78. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Goode. Maurice joined the U.S. Army in 1941. His service of about eight years included duties in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Maurice Allen Wells of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Mrs. Joyce Rebecca W. Newsome, Miss Carol Enid Wells and Mrs. Linda Maria W. Brooks, all of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Gertrude W. Haynes of Goode; a dear, devoted niece, Miss Patricia Wells of Goode; two sisters-in-law; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1997, at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Goode.
