She was born in Glasgow, Va. to the late Robert, Sr. and Mary Thompson Branche. She was a retired school teacher. She is survived by two sisters, R Roberta B. Lyle of Glasgow and Mary B. CLARK, Mildred Padgett, 78, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 1997. She was born April 30, 1918 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Marvin A. Padgett and Parl Creasy Padgett. She was a retired registered nurse and was a member of the Women of the Moose, the Virginia Government Employees Association and the Timber Ridge Baptist Church. She is survived by two brothers, Basil A. Padgett, James A. Padgett both of Bedford; a sister, Audrey Padgett Wright of Virginia Beach. COLLINS, Edna Eunice, 87, of Pembroke, died Tuesday morning, December 31, 1996 in Radford Commu nity Hospital. Born in Giles Co., Va. on October 1, 1909 she was a daughter of the late James William and Lula Mae McPherson Kelley and was also preceded in death by her husband, James Frank Collins; a sister, Robie Hilton; and two brothers, Peck W. Kelley and Hobert Kelley. She was a member of the Pembroke Christian Church. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Roma Snidow Collins of Pembroke, Lawrence and Bertie Sadler Collins of Christiasnburg, and Conrad Collins of Christiansburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Talma and Roscoe Furrow of Christiansburg and Edna and Allen Lawson of Christiansburg; one sister, Gaye Kelley Williams of Pembroke; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. EUBANK, Latane Dean, 67, of Big Island, died Wednesday, January 1, 1997, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Nellie Elizabeth Montgomery Eubank. Born in Botetourt Co., he was the son of the late Charles Ray Eubank and Bertha Hensley Eubank Ashber. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Jean Eubank. Mr. Eubank was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a retired employee of C. & O. Railroad, after 31 years of service. Survivors include one son, Daniel D. Eubank and his wife, Sandra of Lynchburg; five daughters, Linda Eubank, Debra Eubank and Pam Karnes, all of Lynchburg, Shelia Goff and Billie Ayers and her husband, Tommy, all of Big Island; one brother, Earl Ray Eubank of Salem; three sisters, Margaret King of Buchanan, Ellen Frances Deeds of Vinton and Janice Lodge of Hopewell; a devoted friend, Dot Garrett of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. HEDGE, Sherd, 91, of 1501 Dublin Road, Pulaski, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 1, 1997 at the Pulaski Health Care Center, Pulaski, Va. He was born July 28, 1905 in Radford, Va. He was the son of the late Jessie Wade Hedge and Fairy Belle Myers Hedge. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Richardson and four brothers, Clyde Hedge, Homer Hedge, Jessie Hedge and Mack Hedge. He was a life member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pulaski, where he served as Treasurer, Deacon, Church Board, Usher and he was Head Usher at the Appalachian Pentecostal Holiness Conference Church camp meetings for many years at Dublin, Va. He worked for a Wytheville Lumber Company for fourteen years and later moved to Pulaski, where he worked for the former Virginia Oak Flooring Company and former Pulaski Building Supply Company, with approximately thirty-two years of service with the two companies as an office worker. He started out helping Barnett's Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va., the former Strickler's Funeral Home, with twenty years of service and now the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with twenty-six years of service, where he was a very caring and dedicated employee in helping families in time of need. Surviving are his wife of sixty-seven years, Georgia Helen Kirby Hedge, Pulaski; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Sandy Petruso, Charlotte, N.C., Shirley and Ron Mulford, Salisbury, Md.; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl H. and Aline Hedge, Madison Heights; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. John (Dorothy) Kirby, Dublin, Stella Wagoner, Radford, Edna Keffer, Richmond. HUNTER, Richard Thomas, 62, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996, after a brief illness. A native of West Virginia, he resided in Roanoke since 1959, after serving four years in the U. S. Air Force, leaving the military as a Staff Sargeant. A retired mechanic from Piedmont Air Lines and U. S. Air, he had 34 years of employment. Dick or R. T. was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge #163 A.F. & A.M., the Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies, Kazim Shrine Temple and the Kazim Tramp Unit. He was a member of Witcher Baptist Church, Belle, W. Va. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Herbert and Bessie Stevens Hunter and his grandson, Seth Hunter Newman. Surviving are his wife, Mabel ``Johnnie"" Hunter, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and David Newman; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Jennifer Hunter; much beloved grandchildren, Kyle Thomas Beach, Kristopher Newman, Emily Hunter, and Jessica Hunter; and special stepgrandchildren, Michele Brown and Melanie Brown, all of Salem; a brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Helen Hunter of Ohio; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Ronnie Elswick of West Virginia; and several nieces a nd nephews; and many relatives and many, many friends. MARTIN, Pattie Lee, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 30, 1996. Survivors include two foster children, Betty Garnes and Edward Penn, Jr., both of Ridgeway; a very special niece, Dorothy Christian; nephews, Sam Christian, Frank Christian and Russell Christian; niece, Sallie (Marvin) Burris, all of Roanoke; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Elvira Wade. She gave many years of devoted service to her employers, who loved her dearly: Mrs. Marge Claytor, Joseph and Evelyn Raphael, Billy and Carol Roberts, George and Jenny Lito's, Lydia Ostwald and Jane Havnaer Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. She is survived by her present husband, Melvin L. Meador; her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry N. and Rebecca Rogers of Augustus, Ga., Randall L. and Pinky Rogers of Roanoke; her d aughter, Donna Young of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Chris St. Cyr of Roanoke; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one stepgrandchild and two stepgreat-grandchildren. MEADOWS, Charles Richard, 93, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 1997 just a few minutes after the New Year began at his home. He was the son of the late Mack Henry Meadows and Bertha Saunders Meadows. He received his early education in the Roanoke Schools and has been a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church (now Greater Mt. Zion) since childhood. As a member of the Trustee Board, he used great leadership in an advisory capacity as the new church was built in Northeast, and in just a few years had to be razed and relocated to its present site on Grayson Ave., N.W. He has worked zealously with his church in many capacities throughout the years, and is highly esteem and respected for his work in the Valley Baptist Association. He has made great contributions to the religious life in the Roanoke Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Mrs. Carrie Meadows. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway - East End Shop, after many years of faithful service. Those left to survive his death and rejoice in his memory are four sons, Dr. Richard H. Meadows of Richmond and Roanoke, Ralph (Margaret) Meadows, Silver Springs, Md., Frank (Juanita) Meadows, Lake Charles, La., and Donald (Shirley) Meadows, Upper Marlboro, Md.; one daughter, Dorothy Meadows Yancey of Massachusetts and Roanoke; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, John Meadows, Warrensville, Ohio; one sister, Mary Meadows; and one nephew, Rev. James Meadow, both of Philadelphia; devoted cousins, Marilyn L. Curtis and Bobby Clarke and extended members of the Claude L. Clarke Family and other relatives. Even during his illness his mind was keen and alert and he was known for his philosophies of life and he held his companions spellbound, especially regarding the early life in the Northeast Neighborhood and its history. OGDEN, Bernard R., , 91, of Covington, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center, Buena Vista. Born May 14, 1905 in Coffeytown section of Amherst County, the son of the late Champ Lee and Nora Coffey Ogden. He was a member of the First Nazarene Church in Covington. He had made his home with his sister, Mrs. Smiley Clements and her daughter, Nora Hipes in Covington since 1961. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1997 from the graveside in Green Hill Cemetery, Buena Vista with Pastor Stanley Ogden officiating. RAYNAL, Margaret Elizabeth, 31, of Gainesville, Florida and formerly of Lexington, Va., died Thursday, December 26,1996. She was born on January 31, 1965 in Sanford, N.C., a daughter of the Rev. H. Middleton Raynal and Florence C. Raynal, Lexington. She graduated from Natural Bridge High School and obtained her degree from James Madison University and then earned a Master's Degree in Health Science from the University of Florida. At the time of her death, she was a Training Specialist in the Bicycle and Florida Traffic Safety Education Program of the University of Florida Department of Urban and Regional Planning. She was a certified cycling instructor with the League of American Bicyclists. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Gainesville, Fla. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are three brothers, Wayne S. Raynal, Lexington, John M. Raynal, Natural Bridge and Clark S. Raynal, Richmond; maternal grandmother, India S. Clark, Harrisonburg. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1997, in the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. William M. Klein and the Rev. William K. Survivors include her husband, Curtis Woodard Roane, Blacksburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Aurora Roane and Larry Clyde VanBuskirk, Bath, Michigan; a son and daughter-in-law, Ernest Lee and Bonnie Campbell Roane, Burlington, N.C.; five grandchildren, Christopher Justin and wife Terri VanBuskirk, Martha Ellen VanBuskirk, all of Bath, Michigan, Derek Adams Roane, James Olin Painter, both of Burlington, N.C. and Christopher Bryan Painter, Clarksville, Tenn.; a great-granddaughter, Devin Nichole VanBuskirk, Bath, Michigan; a half brother and sister-in-law, Mauri and Kim Kotila, their daughters, Lily and Sylvana Kotila; and a stepmother, Clara Kotila, all of Redding, Conn. Educated at Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan and VPI & SU, she was a retired Adjunct Professor of Plant Pathology. She had taught at Radford University and VPI & SU and also conducted research involving fungi, chestnut blight and rhododendron. A Fellow of the Virginia Academy of Science, Dr. Roane chaired the Flora Committee and Edited ``Jeffersonia"". Honored by Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta and Omicron Delta Kappa, she was a life member and past faculty advisor of Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Phi Omega. She was a Red Cross Blood Mobile volunteer and a dedicated Scouter. A former Girl Scout Troop Leader, she was a committee member of Boy Scout Troop 44, Advancement Chairman for Moneton District and Blue Ridge Mountains Council, Wood Badge Instructor, and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Dr. Roane was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and a member of the Council Endowment Committee. She was a member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, where she received the God and Service Award given by the church and the Boy Scouts of America. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1997, at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Cathy Carpenter officiating. SHUPE, Lawrence Lester, 82, of Meadowview, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996 in the Johnson Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. SIGMON, Ruby Sloan, of Rocky Mount, formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996, at her residence. Mrs. Sigmon was a hairdresser at S. H. Heironimus Department Store for many years. She was the widow of Raymond Wallace Sigmon. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Tonia and Jose Camina, Southern Pines, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Autrey and Polly Sigmon, Cullman, Ala; six grandchildren, Teran, Savin and Lily Camina, and Stephanie, Melanie and Todd Sigmon; her mother, Maude C. Sloan, Ferrum; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nell and Jack Russell, Danville, Sylbia and Jesse Wray, Rocky Mount. SMITH, Maxine Edna Austin, 86, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, December 31,1996 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born September 25, 1910 in Ironto, Va., she was a daughter of the late Willie Richard Austin and Cordelia Frances Miller Austin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James Edmond Smith. She is survived by her children, Odessa Merchant and her husband, John of Lynchburg, Lois Graham of Roanoke, Richard Smith and his wife Nancy of Lumberton, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Smith of Good; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Alma Austin Perdue of Ironto; two sisters-in-law, Lelia O. Austin of Salem and Nora B. Austin of Roanoke; and eight nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg. Services will be held Friday at 12 noon, January 3, 1997, at Hall's United Methodist Church, Ironto, Va., with Jesse Jay officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. VAUGHAN, Hallie Mae Brannock, 77, of Amory Road in Galax, passed away Friday morning, December 27, 1996, at her home. Mrs. Vaughan was born in Grayson County, Va. on September 9, 1919 to O. A. Brannock and Phoebe Richardson Brannock. She is survived by her husband, Freeman M. Vaughan, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Moraski of Galax; one son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Janice Vaughan of Galax; two sisters, Grace Maines of Virginia Beach and Alma McKenzie of Galax; six brothers, Earl Brannock of Charlottesville, Fletcher Brannock and Elbert Brannock, both of Waynesboro, Virgil Brannock of Staunton, Dorsey Brannock of Richmond and Mack Brannock of Galax; four grandchildren, Janique Vaughan-Oldham of Galax, Felicia Vaughan-Shields of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., John M. Moraski, III of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Jay M. Moraski of Galax. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Felts Memorial Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, with fellowship to follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church. WELLS, Constance Elaine, of Roanoke, Va., died Tuesday, December 31, 1996 in a local hospital. Mrs. Wells was born in the Adirondack Mountain community of Warrensburg, N.Y. After graduating from Warrensburg High School, she married Kenneth Wells and moved to Glens Falls, N.Y. There as a wife and young mother, she led Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops and became active in politics and civil rights activities as well as becoming a licensed real estate broker. In the late 1940s she served as assistant secretary and then vice-president of the New York State Association of Young Republicans. In 1948 she played an active role in the Republican National Covention that nominated then Governor Thomas E. Dewey as its candidate for President. In 1952 as Mr. Wells's home manufacturing business (Northern Homes, Inc.) expanded, the family moved to Penn., living first in Waynesboro, then Allentown, then Chambersburg, Harrisburg, Carlisle and again in Chambersburg. During these years, Mrs. Wells pursued her interests in interior decorating, ballroom dancing, and world travel, while continuing her involvement in civic and church activities and working part time as a medical secretary. During the family's second residency in Chambersburg, Mrs. Wells was active in the NAACP and served as treasurer of Christ Episcopal Church. After Mr. Wells retired in 1978 as president of Northern Homes and with their four children all married, the couple moved to Roanoke, where Mrs. Wells continued her interests in church and civic activities. A communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, she had recently became a volunteer at Roanoke Area Ministries (RAM House), of which her daughter, Mrs. Wilson Moore is executive director. Besides traveling extensively in the Caribbean, Europe and parts of Africa, the Wellses spent several winters in Flordia and lived in Naples, Fla. from 1987-1991. Mrs. Wells is survived by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Wells; her sister, Florence Hayes Cowan, Albany, N.Y.; sons and daughter-in-law, H. Clarke Wells, Daly City, Calif.; Barry Alden and Helen Schreiber Wells, Blacksburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Wells Frishkoff and Bruce Frishkoff, Harlemville, N.Y., Wendy Wells Moore and Wilson P. ``Bill"" Moore, Roanoke; grandchildren, Adria Wells Murphy, Daly City, Calif., Stacia Wells Fayson, Sunnyvale, Calif., Cindy Wells Febbraro, Bath, Penn., Jocelyn Wells Ash, Blacksburg, Andrew Louis Frishkoff, Philadelphia, Penn., Simon David Frishkoff, Seattle, Wash., Ryland Bennett Moore and Wilson Parker Moore, Roanoke; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wells was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Lemuel and Emma Fuller Hayes and an older sister, Marion Hayes Hoag. A memorial service will be conducted at St. John's Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1997. WHEELER, Mary Martha Stoner, 73, of Natural Bridge Station, died Wednesday, January 1, 1997 at the home of her daughter, Debra Goodbar. Mrs. Wheeler was born July 17, 1923 in Rockbridge County and was the daughter of the late William Albert Stoner and Mary Mitcheal Stoner. Mrs. Wheeler had worked as housekeeper for the Westmoreland Motel and was preceded in death by her husband, Brownie Odel Wheeler. Also preceding her in death was a son ,Kenneth Wayne Wheeler, brother, William A. Stoner, Jr. and a grandson, Mark E. Wells. Surviving are three daughters, Charlotte Wells, Waynesboro, Phyllis Bare, Natural Bridge Station, Debra Goodbar, Lexington; two brothers, Calvin R. Stoner, John Lee Stoner, both of Natural Bridge Station; two sisters, France M. Chittum, Alexandria, Nancy I. Montgomery, Richmond; six grandchildren, Amanda B. Wheeler, Shawn T. Wheeler, Brittney N. Bare, Kevin O. Wells, Jeffrey A. Goodbar, Chad C. Goodbar; and two great-grandchildren.
