TIMOTHY CAMPBELL, son of Peggy Campbell, and NICKY STROCK II, daughter of Lynn Strock, both of Roanoke, are two of 20 high school graduates who have won scholarships from First Union Corp. These scholarships can be up to $4,000 a year for four years.
Winners were chosen from the employees' children and stepchildren based on financial need and academic excellence. This is the first year of First Union's scholarship program.
THE GILES SCHOLASTIC CHESS TOURNAMENT winners include: individual open scholastic - Mark DiProsperis, James Madison Middle School, first place, and Jonathan Tanner, Patrick Henry High School, third place; team - Patrick Henry High School, first place; individual elementary section - Adam Tanner, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, third place; team - Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle School, second place, and Raleigh Court Elementary School, third place; individual elementary beginners - Brock Newton, Crystal Spring Elementary School, first place, and Christina Tiller, Oakland Intermediate School, third place.
The tournament was held in Pearisburg on Nov. 9.
THE ROANOKE CITY CHESS TOURNAMENT winners include: individual open section - Mark DiProsperis, James Madison Middle School, second place; team - Patrick Henry High School, first place, James Madison Middle School, second place, and William Fleming High School, third place; individual elementary section - Adam Tanner, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, second place, and Philip Marlles, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, third place; team - Fishburn Park Elementary School, second place, and Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle School, third place; individual primary section - Gregory Mobley, Fishburn Park WEB Elementary School, third place; top 10 beginners - Yuri Nikiforov, Crystal Spring Elementary School, second place, and David Thomas, Preston Park Elementary School, third place.
SCOTT BINNINGS, an eighth-grader at Woodrow Wilson Middle School, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee on Dec. 18. Winners of the school-level bees take a written test to qualify for the state bee, and state winners compete at the national level for a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.
A series of geography contests will be offered on National Geographic Online's "kids" site in 1997 at www.nationalgeographic.com.
THE PATRICK HENRY HIGH SCHOOL FORENSICS TEAM has won several debates early in the forensics season. Individual honors were earned by four Patrick Henry students at the University of Georgia Debate Tournament. Yaron Rachlin was the undefeated tournament champion in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate. Trip Creech and Latisha Sinkford both tied for third in Novice Lincoln-Douglas debate. In Varsity Policy debate, Jennifer Rogers tied for fifth out of more than 160 debaters.
