Alumni views sought on school name
Alumni of Central Academy School in Fincastle are requested to attend a meeting of the New Countywide League on Saturday to discuss the name change of William Clark School.

MDA seeks nominees for awards
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is seeking nominations for its sixth annual Personal Achievement Awards. The awards recognize the accomplishments and community service of people with disabilities caused by neuromuscular diseases.

Children's workshops set for King Day
The Harrison Museum of African American Culture will present Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day workshops for children ages 6-12 on Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The workshop will consist of discussions, games and activities related to the works of King and the civil rights movement. The program is free; however, advance registration is required because of limited space.

Botetourt classes for adults set
Second semester adult continuing education evening classes offered by the Botetourt County Public School Division will begin next week. Basketball tryouts at Salem schools
Tryouts for the Salem Recreation Department A.A.U. Basketball Program will be held Jan. 12.
Times and locations are: Salem High School - girls 13 and under, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.; girls 14 and over, 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Andrew Lewis Middle School - boys 11 and under, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.; boys 12-13, 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Tryouts for boys 14 and over will be held at a later date. Preston Park offers square dance lessons
A free western square dancing lesson will be held at Preston Park Recreation Center on Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. A 10-week beginner class will be held Fridays with instructor Ralph Necessary, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. starting Jan. 17. Roanoke crews collect leaves in Southwest
City of Roanoke crews will begin collecting loose leaves in zone Southwest 3-G Monday morning. Residents should have leaves raked to the curb.
Maps identifying leaf collection zones are available at all city libraries and fire stations, and in the Nov. 7 edition of Neighbors. Leaf collection has been completed in all other sections of the city.
Bad weather may cause delays in the leaf collection schedule.
Residents who bag leaves may place them on the curb on their regular trash collection day. To help the city crews, place leaf bags apart from regular trash.
