ALTRUIST CLUB PRESENTS DEBUTANTES, AWARDS

Fourteen debutantes were presented last Friday night at the Altruist Club's 45th annual Debutante Ball at the Roanoke Airport Marriott. The Altruist Club, a nonprofit organization, gives grants to local charities and provides scholarships for college-bound students.

Named Deb Queen was Shana Cortee Waller. First runner-up was Amy Marcell Bethel, and Tosha Renee Henderson was second runner-up. Each will receive a college scholarship from money raised by the debutantes for this year's ball, whose honorary chairs were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Day. Each debutante has a presenter, who pays a fee to sponsor her. Debutantes sell tickets and solicit for ads and patrons. Friends of the debutantes called "ladies-in-waiting" help sell tickets as well as provide moral support for them.
