INTERNET'S INFLUENCE: Nancy Healy, Hollins College's lecturer in computer science, will disclose "Ten Surprising Things You Can Do On the Internet" during a free noontime talk Wednesday at the YWCA in downtown Roanoke. Healy will show some of the Internet's present versatility and culture-modifying influences, as well as some expected in the future. Bring a lunch to eat during the presentation, if you wish. THE WHITE HOUSE COLLECTION of American Crafts will be ending its stay at the Art Museum of Western Virginia at Roanoke's Center in the Square on Jan. 12. On Thursday, quiltmaker Ellen Kochansky, whose work is included in the collection, will present a gallery talk from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the museum.

Kochansky maintains that the collection's artists "represent a community of American artists making their living in a way that would be unlikely or impossible in any other part of the world." She will discuss the artists' connections to each other and to economic realities. The lecture is free. Call 342-5760.

TRAIN LECTURE: William Withuhn, a federally licensed locomotive engineer and curator of transportation at the Smithsonian Institution, will talk Thursday about "People and Railroads and the Building of America." The free lecture at 7 p.m. will be held at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. Call 342-5670.

THE ROANOKE FIDDLE & BANJO CLUB will host a concert Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium. The concert will feature bluegrass and gospel music and clogging by the Patrick Henry Travelers. The concert is free, but donations are accepted. Call 375-3949.

LAUGH WITH LEAKE: Comedian Brette Leake, who has appeared on "The Tonight Show," Comedy Central and the "Jerry Lewis Telethon," will perform tonight and Saturday at the Comedy Gallery Theatre Showroom in the Roanoke Airport Marriott.

Leake has developed a national reputation as one of the funniest "clean" comics. Shows are at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. and the cost is $7. Call 563-9300.

LIME KILN'S ANNUAL TWELFTH NIGHT PARTY will take place Sunday at the Lime Kiln site in Lexington. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and at 6:30, a huge bonfire of discarded Christmas trees will be lighted, so bring along your tree to throw on the fire. Free hot apple cider and coffee will be served. THE MONSTER TRUCK THRILL SHOW SPECTACULAR will be held tonight through Sunday at the Salem Civic Center. The action starts at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Ticket prices range from $10 to $15 in advance and $12.50 to $17.50 on the day of the show. Little truck lovers under 12 pay half price. Call 375-3004.

LAST CHANCE TO GO BATTY: ``Masters of the Night - The True Story of Bats,'' an interactive display at the Science Museum of Western Virginia in Roanoke, will close for good Sunday.

The exhibit includes life-size models, interactive video, echoing cave shafts, hands-on bat heads, and other multisensory displays.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for ages 3-12. The museum is located at Center in the Square in downtown Roanoke. Call 342-5710.
