PHOTOGRAPHER SENSED WHERE TROUBLE WOULD HIT

When gunfire erupted near Hebron's central market, shoppers and journalists alike dived for cover.

Adam C. Amsinck, a photographer working for The Associated Press, stood his ground Wednesday, taking a dramatic photograph of an off-duty soldier shooting into the crowded market. The picture was on the front page of Thursday's Roanoke Times.

Amsinck, 24, of Copenhagen, Denmark, has been an intern in the AP's Jerusalem bureau for two months. He said he staked out the square because it was a crossroads where Jewish settlers, Israeli soldiers and Palestinian shoppers came together.

``I had the feeling something might happen,'' Amsinck said.

When the shooting started, Amsinck was about 50 yards from the soldier who opened fire. A half-dozen television cameramen and photographers were also in the area.

``It was by instinct. I grabbed the camera and started shooting,'' he said. ``I was one moment faster than the others. That was my luck.''

Amsinck shot the incident with a manual-focus Nikon FM2.
