COVINGTON CAN'T HANDLE RVC PRESS

It took Roanoke Valley Christian three quarters Thursday night, but the Eagles did what their coach wanted just in time: They went to the press.

RVC used full-court man-to-man defense in the fourth quarter and held visiting Covington to one field goal from then on to win a non-district boys' game 62-58 at the Eagles' gym.

RVC (6-2) outscored the Cougars 19-8 in the fourth period to rally from a seven-point deficit.

Sophomore guard Brad Hutchins led the Eagles with a career-high 26 points. Mark DeLong added 12.

Tracy Walker led Covington (1-5) with 14 points and Erwin Twitty added 13.

Girls

Morehead (N.C.) 62, Franklin County 52: Tasha Williams scored 12 points and Kelli Preston had 11 as the Eagles dropped a non-district game in Rocky Mount.

Free throws were the difference: Morehead hit 16 of 22; Franklin County 12 of 35.
