O'KON, Harvey J., 66, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996. Surviving are his wife, Myrtle M. O'Kon; a son, Ronald M. O'Kon, Collegedale, Tenn.; mother, Marie E. O'Kon of East Point, Michigan; brothers, Fred C. O'Kon, East Point, Michigan, Richard B. O'Kon, New York, N.Y.; a nephew, George J. O'Kon; nieces, Elizabeth O'Kon, Maureen Block, all of Michigan. PHILLIPS, Canous East, 68, of 42 Wright Avenue, Dublin, died Wednesday, January 1, 1997, in the Radford Community Hospital. She was born in Christiansburg on June 17, 1928, and was the daughter of the late Guy C. East and Ethel Thornton East. She was a retired employee of R.A.A.P., Radford. Surviving are daughters, Gina Phillips, Dublin, Carol Cressell, Dublin, Joy Bowden, Pulaski; sons, Eddie Phillips, Pulaski, Jeff Phillips, Fairlawn; special daughter-in-law, Lynn Phillips, Fairlawn; special son-in-law, Roy Bowden, Pulaski; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gilbert C. and Patricia Hull East, Pulaski, Curtis G. and Jane Hurst East, Dublin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Maudie and William C. Hodge, Pulaski, Daffron and Darrell Golliher, Pulaski, Mozelle and Woodson Duncan, Allisonia; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. RICHARDS, Colonel Frederick William, U.S. Army (Retired), 84, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 1997 after a long illness. The widower of Dorothy Ellen Cooper Richards, he is survived by his daughters, Sally R. Dorr and Susan R. Nunnally; sons, Colonel James C. Richards, USAF (Ret.) and William Frank Richards of Roanoke; seven great-grandchildren. His f uneral service will be held at Beulah United Methodist Church 10 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 1997. RICHARDSON, Bertha H., 85, of Salem, died Thursday, January 2, 1997. She was formerly an 82-year resident of Capels, W. Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buford Richardson, and a son, Glenn A. Clay. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Paulette and Terry Isherwood of Salem, with whom she made her home, and Edith and Lee Coulson, of Hillsville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; also surviving are sisters, Evelene Bayles of Princeton, W. Va., Ivelene Lowery (Mrs. Paul) of Richmond; brothers, Eugene Smith of Lundale, W. Va., Robert Smith, of Havaco, W. Va. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 5, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the O. J. ROBERTSON, Lillian Virginia, 73, of Pembroke, died Wednesday, January 1, 1997, in Skyline Manor in Floyd County. Born in Mayberry, W.Va. on April 5, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Stephen A. and Willie Hale Thornton. She was a member of the Olean Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her husband, George L. Robertson; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Rose Lester Turner of Rin er; three grandchildren, Amanda, Jessica, and Amy. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 4, 1997, at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke with the Rev. Roger Booth and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. SCOTT, Valiere Dow, 92, of Elliston, died Wednesday, January 1, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rollin J. Scott; her parents, James W. and Mary F. Dow; three sisters, and 12 brothers. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Goldie and Clinton Croc kett of Elliston; two sons, James R. Scott of Columbus, Ohio, and Mason F. Scott of Elliston; three grandchildren and wives, Clinton J. Crockett Jr. and Rhonda of Waldorf, Md., Joyce Pittman of Long Island, N.Y., and Robert Scott and Gertrude of Long Island, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, January 4, 1997, at First Baptist Church, Elliston, with the Rev. David Parker officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. SEXTON, Ruby Pearl, 86, of Shawsville, died Tuesday, December 31, 1996, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. She was born on October 29, 1910, to the late Burton and Rodella Harriman in Barren Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Lemon Sexton Sr., and is survived by two daughters, Reba S. Caldwell of Blacksburg and Gertrude S. Altman of VIrginia Beach; two sons, Noah Preston Sexton II of New Town, N.Y., and Edgar Lemon Sexton Jr. of Bulleton, Calif., and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 1997, at Big Springs Baptist Church in Elliston, with the Rev. Todd Knock officiating. SOLE, Ruby Kelley Slusher, 93, of Our Lady of the Valley, Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 2, 1997. She was the widow of Dennis A. Kelley, Curtis G. Slusher, and Russell E. Sole. Surviving are three da ughters and a son-in-law, Mrs. Ethel K. Altice and husband, Perry, Daleville, Mrs. Vivian K. Massie, Roanoke, Mrs. Gayle K. Roberts, Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis R. Kelley and wife, Nelwyn, Springfield; 16 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren; three half sisters, Mrs. Mary Meador, Roanoke, Mrs. Jo Vipperman, Salem, Mrs. Minnie Sarver, Charleston, W.Va.; and a half brother, Calvin Bower, Roanoke. SUTPHIN, Dorothy Vernell, 65, of Willis, passed away Thursday, January 2, 1997 at her home. Survivors include her former husband, Elmer Sutphin, Willis; five daughters, Teresa Sutphin, Lois Hylton, Doris Weddle, all of Willis, Carol Dalton, Statesville, N.C., Geneva Hylton, Floyd; two sons, James Edward Sutphin, Jack Sutphin, both of Willis; two brothers, Odell Bolt, Willis, Robert Bolt, Laurel Fork; two sisters, Gyndell Sutphin, Willis, Arnilla Sut phin, Prince Frederick, MD.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. VAUGHAN, Hallie Mae Brannock, 77, of Amory Road in Galax, passed away Tuesday morning, December 31,1996, at her home. Mrs. Vaughan was born in Grayson County, Va. on September 9, 1919 to O. A. Brannock and Phoebe Richardson Brannock. She is survived by her husband, Freeman M. Vaughan, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Moraski of Galax; one son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Janice Vaughan of Galax; two sisters, Grace Maines of Virginia Beach and Alma McKenzie of Galax; six brothers, Earl Brannock of Charlottesville, Fletcher Brannock and Elbert Brannock, both of Waynesboro, Virgil Brannock of Staunton, Dorsey Brannock of Richmond and Mack Brannock of Galax; four grandchildren, Janique Vaughan-Oldham of Galax, Felicia Vaughan-Shields of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., John M. Moraski, III of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Jay M. Moraski of Galax. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Felts Memorial Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, with fellowship to follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Dr. Thomas J. Whartenby and the Rev. R. Claxton Hall will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening and from 12 to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. WALROND, Johnnie Mae Stewart, 75, formerly of Roanoke, died Monday, December 23, 1996 in Agawam, Mass. She was predeceased by a son, Francis L. (Buddy) Walrond. Surviving are four children, Betty Anne Walrond, N.Y., Allan L. Walrond, Sarasota, Fla., Jack Walrond, Warwick, R. I., Mrs. Kenneth (Jean Walrond) Mantha, Agawam, Mass.; three grandchildren, Robert Settembro, Sara Mantha and Amy Mantha; a sister, Mrs. A. E. (Betty Stewart) Kessler; a brother, Jack G. Stewart, both of Roanoke. Memorials may be made to the Am erican Heart Association. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 1997 from Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Frank Feather officiating.

WELLS, Constance Elaine, of Roanoke, Va., died Tuesday, December 31, 1996 in a local hospital. Mrs. Wells was born in the Adirondack Mountain community of Warrensburg, N.Y. After graduating from Warrensburg High School, she married Kenneth Wells and moved to Glens Falls, N.Y. There as a wife and young mother, she led Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops and became active in politics and civil rights activities as well as becoming a licensed real estate broker. In the late 1940s she served as assistant secretary and then vice-president of the New York State Association of Young Republicans. In 1948 she played an active role in the Republican National Convention that nominated then Governor Thomas E. Dewey as its candidate for President. In 1952 as Mr. Wells's home manufacturing business (Northern Homes, Inc.) expanded, the family moved to Penn., living first in Waynesboro, then Allentown, then Chambersburg, Harrisburg, Carlisle and again in Chambersburg. During these years, Mrs. Wells pursued her interests in interior decorating, ballroom dancing, and world travel, while continuing her involvement in civic and church activities and working part time as a medical secretary. During the family's second residency in Chambersburg, Mrs. Wells was active in the NAACP and served as treasurer of Christ Episcopal Church. After Mr. Wells retired in 1978 as president of Northern Homes and with their four children all married, the couple moved to Roanoke, where Mrs. Wells continued her interests in church and civic activities. A communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, she had recently became a volunteer at Roanoke Area Ministries (RAM House), of which her daughter, Mrs. Wilson Moore is executive director. Besides traveling extensively in the Caribbean, Europe and parts of Africa, the Wellses spent several winters in Florida and lived in Naples, Fla. from 1987-1991. Mrs. Wells is survived by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Wells; her sister, Florence Hayes Cowan, Albany, N.Y.; sons and daughter-in-law, H. Clarke Wells, Daly City, Calif.; Barry Alden and Helen Schreiber Wells, Blacksburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Wells Frishkoff and Bruce Frishkoff, Harlemville, N.Y., Wendy Wells Moore and Wilson P. ``Bill"" Moore, Roanoke; grandchildren, Adria Wells Murphy, Daly City, Calif., Stacia Wells Fayson, Sunnyvale, Calif., Cindy Wells Febbraro, Bath, Penn., Jocelyn Wells Ash, Blacksburg, Andrew Louis Frishkoff, Philadelphia, Penn., Simon David Frishkoff, Seattle, Wash., Ryland Bennett Moore and Wilson Parker Moore, Roanoke; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wells was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Lemuel and Emma Fuller Hayes and an older sister, Marion Hayes Hoag. A memorial service will be conducted at St. John's Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. Friday, January 3, 1997. Friends will be received following the service in St. John's Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church Building Fund or the Roanoke Area Ministries, (RAM House). Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

WHEATLEY, Jane Poe, 51, of Independence, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 1997. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday, Reins-Sturdivant Chapel.
