ASHCRAFT, Robert Lynn, Captain, U.S. Navy (Ret.), 75, of Roanoke, died Saturday, January 4, 1997, in a local hospital. Bob, the son of Lewis and Gladys Ashcraft of San Jose, Calif., was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Virginia Cameron Ashcraft. He is survived by his wife, Judith Hawthorne Ashcraft, and by his children, Robert Ashcraft of Christiansburg and Martha Ashcraft McMahon of Stafford; his grandson, Matthew McMahon; his stepchildren, Paxton Hawthorne and Marilee Hawthorne Creekmore of Roanoke and Karen Hawthorne Glascock of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; stepgrandchildren, Hannah Hawthorne and Sally Creekmore, and by his brother-in-law and wife, Scott and Sharon Cameron of California. He attended San Jose College, where he was heavyweight boxing champion, and was graduated from George Washington University. He was a U.S. Naval aviator and piloted PBYs in the Aleutians with PAT Wing 4 during World War II, qualified on aircraft carriers, served as the navigator for the first Pacific hydrogen bomb testing, commanded a squadron of heavy duty attack bombers deployed over the Pacific, attended the War College, taught at the U.S. Air Force War College, founded a school for non-commissioned officers in Pensacola, served at the Pentagon in aircraft design, and among his commendations were two air medals. He came to Roanoke as the Assistant Director of the Fifth Planning District, and later was affiliated with Waldron Realty and Cornett Realty. He served on the boards of Virginia Lutheran Family Services, Unified Human Services Transportation System (RADAR), Roanoke Red Cross, United Way, The Bradley Free Clinic, Roanoke Breakfast Lions Club and The Retired Officers Association (TROAA). He was a past president of TROAA and of the Roanoke Breakfast Lions Club, which honored him with the Melvin Jones Award for Distinguished Service. He was a member of the Roanoke Businessmen's Club, Military Order of World Wars and St. Mark's Lutheran Church. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 8. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Interment will be in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Bradley Free Clinic, 1240 Third Street, Roanoke, Va. 24016, or to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Franklin Road at Highland Avenue, Roanoke, Va. 24011.

COATES, Elizabeth Huger, 89, of Lexington, died Friday, January 3, 1997 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She was born November 10, 1907 in Lexington, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Lucy Shipp Huger. She was a member of the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church and former owner of the The Music Box in Lexington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Retired Lt. Col. Harry Luther Coates. Surviving are two daughters, Lucy Huger Coates Moise of Newark, Del., Julia Harleston Coates Littlefield of Lexington; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, January 6, 1997 from the graveside in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery followed by a memorial service in the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church with the Rev. R. David Cox and the Rev. Sandra Levy officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the R. E. COOPER, Clovis King, 83, of Bent Mountain, passed away Friday, January 3, 1997 at her home. She was the owner and operator of the Pantry Restaurant at Bent Mountain. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Cooper; brother, James N. King and a sister, Gladys King Reid. Survivors include one son, Howard D. Cooper, Spartanburg, S.C.; three grandsons, Lt. Cmdr. John H. Cooper, Newport, R.I., Brian L. Cooper, Spartanburg, S.C., Dwayne A. Cooper, Greenville, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Julianne Cooper, Spartanburg, S.C.; special nephew, James N. King II, Roanoke; two special nieces, Carolyn Young and Sallie Grubb both of Roanoke; special friend, Marbrie Worrell, Bent Mountain; also several other nieces and nephews survive. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Dale Bowman and the Rev. Frank Wimmer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. COVINGTON, Harry B., 79, of Cumberland, formerly of Buena Vista and Richmond, died Friday, January 3, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Lois S. Covington; four daughters, Helen Wiggins of Green Bay, Sharon Eades and Lois Barger of Chester and Doris Bryant of Bradenton, Fla.; two sons, Jack Covington of Dillwyn and John Slough Sr. of Richmond; four sisters, Vivian Morris, Gladys Schlim me, Dorothy Clifton and Eva Windell, all of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Allen Covington of New York and Jasper Covington of Pennsylvania; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn. DE SHAZO, Kathryn Raines, 71, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, December 31, 1996, in Melbourne, Fla. She was born in Lynchb urg on May 27, 1925, and moved from Roanoke to So. Brevard County in 1996. She was a retired secretary with the Virginia State School System, and a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church, Roanoke. She is survived by her husband, T. P. ``Tom'' De Shazo of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Tom Jr. and Helen De Shazo of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Deborah De Shazo Thomas, Suellen De Shazo and Stan Adams, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sister, Hazel Raines Williams of Lynchburg; brother, Wallace S. DUDLEY, Mealie Jane, 106, of Richmond, formerly of Franklin County, died Thursday, January 2, 1997. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Mrs. Beulah G. (Saunders) Johnson of Richmond and Mrs. Ethel M. Christian of Long Island, N.Y.; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Guy (Mary) Dudley of Rocky Mount, Grover (Gloria) Dudley of Martinsville, Charles (Audrey) Dudley of Moneta and Mrs. Lutisha Dudley of Fieldale, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at the Halesford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James D. Holland officiating. FELTY, Edith Edna Martin, 102, of Wytheville, died Friday, January 3, 1997, at Birdmont Health Care Center. She was born February 18, 1894, in Greenwood, a daughter of the late John William and Matilda Jane Moyer Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Felty, and an infant son. Mrs. Felty graduated from Greenwood High School and Roanoke Business College. She came to Wytheville and accepted a position with the S. F. Ewald Insurance Agency in 1914. She joined the St. Paul Methodist Church in 1915, where she taught Sunday school for 50 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Willis L. (Helen) Corvin and Mrs. William L. (Margaret) Snavely of Wytheville; grandchildren, William B. and Mary Corvin of Herndon, Willis G. and Loretta Corvin of Thaxton, Lynda H. and Ray Dossett of Morehead City, N.C., and Robert J. and Caroline Hurt of Smithfield; a stepgrandson, Michael and Teresa Snavely of Marion; 11 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Maude Du Bois of Milford, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Myrtle Repass of Birdmont Health Care Center, and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 6, 1997, at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in East End Cemetery. GLASS, George Washington, 78, of Salem, passed away Friday, January 3, 1997. He was a lifetime member of First Christian Church, Salem. A former member and past president of the Lame Buck Hunt Club for many years. He also served as a Volunteer for the Roanoke Valley Blind Bowlers Association. Retired from Joe Prillaman Heating & Air after several years of service. Mr. Glass was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Etta D. (Katie) Glass. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Georgia and Joe Prillaman, Amelia (Tiny) Miller, Ruth and David Witt; brothers, William G., Robert S. and Joseph Glass; grandchildren and spouses, Samantha N. Witt, George A. Prillaman and wife, Barbara, Mark A. Prillaman and wife, Tracy, Donette W. Spence and husband, Randy, David S. Witt and wife, Renee'; great-grandchildren, Christopher A. HAMILTON, Tessie Henson, 88, Buena Vista, died Saturday, January 4, 1997 at her home. She was born in Amherst County daughter of the late William Henson and Sarah Chittum Henson. She was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Buena Vista. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tracy M. Hamilton. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Buddy Roberts and Daisy and Fred Shaver all of Buena Vista; two brothers, Raymond Henson and Ralph Henson; one sister, Ethel Campbell all of Buena Vista; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and very special friend, Missy Rowsey. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Elder Roy Southers officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. HARPER, J. Wilson, 85, of Farmville, died Friday, January 3, 1997, in Southside Community Hospital in Farmville. Mr. Harper was the eldest son of the late George William and Catherine Garber Harper, born in Timberville on August 29, 1911. He married the former Helen Rhodes of Broadway on October 14, 1934. From 1936 until retiring in 1968, he served as a Trooper for the Virginia State Police, and subsequently was employed as Assistant Manager for the Town of Farmville until 1977. A gifted craftsman, he built his home in 1952. In retirement, he was renowned for his Early American reproduction furniture. Since 1938, he was a member of Farmville United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class, and for many years he served as a member of the Administrative Board. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Jay W. Harper of Marion; five sisters, Mrs. Eline Frye of Harrisonburg, Mrs. Genevieve Weese of Linville, Mrs. Lucille Cook of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Elizabeth Shiflett of Virginia Beach and Mrs. Dorothy Jane Renoe of Potomac, Md.; two brothers, Richard Harper and William Harper of Harrisonburg, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Farmville United Methodist Church, with interment in Westview Cemetery. HUFF, Virginia Moore, 89, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 3, 1997. She was a native of Pulaski and had resided there until 1956, when she moved to Roanoke. She was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke, where she had served as president of her Sunday School class. Then in 1991 she moved to Salem where she joined Bethel Baptist Church and enjoyed an active involvement in many of the church's activities. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, William Neal Huff Sr.; a son, Malcom Blaine Huff, and a grandson, Timothy Blaine Huff. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-laws, William Neal Huff Jr., Dublin, Louise Poole Huff, Hillsville, Rev. Harry E. and Arlene Huff, Arlington, Texas, Bob J. and Karla Huff, Dugspur, Rev. W. Wesley and Fern Huff, Lynchburg; daughter and son-in-law, Rev. HURT, Dr. John O. Sr., 89, of Vinton, passed away Saturday, January 4, 1997. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ola Murray Hurt. He was born in Roanoke, May 11, 1907 to Laviel E. and Mary Omohundro Hurt. He received his medical education at the University of Virginia and served for several years with the Department of Mental Health for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Dr. Hurt was a veteran of World War II serving as Major in the Medical Corp of the U.S. Army participating in five major invasions in the Pacific Theatre. He practiced as a physician in Vinton until his retirement in 1975 including physician to the William Byrd High School Athletic Department and served as a medical examiner for Roanoke County. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. He was a member of the American Medical Association, a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a founding member of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia, and member of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Anne) King of Cookeville, Tenn.; son, John O. Hurt Jr. M.D. of Craig County; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Richard D. Hurt of Greensboro, N.C. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel 1 p.m. Monday, January 6, 1997 with the Rev. Ernie Johnson officiating. Entombment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Johnson (Mary) of Salem, David Eugene Johnson (Margaret) of Daleville; 26 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Howard Johnson of Washington D.C.; sisters-in-law, Cary Clark of Roanoke, Bertha Johnson of Fincastle, Rose Hall of Washington D.C.; a devoted and loving niece, Eleanor C.
