The Roanoke Times survey of regional business and economic conditions has been conducted annually for about 20 years. This year a 12-question form was sent to executives and operators of 188 area companies; 88 responded in time to be included in the statistical results, reflecting a 47 percent response rate. Three others arrived after the numbers were crunched..
The questionnaires were mailed in late November and returned by mid-December. Companies were asked to provide business indicators such as employment levels as of Sept.30.
Replies were confidential. Completed surveys were returned directly to The Center for Community Research at Roanoke College. The college gave The Roanoke Time only statistical summaries of replies and unattributed responses to open-ended questions.
Companies were identified only by their lines of business. The Roanoke Times paid the college for its research services and analysis of the results.
