FURNITURE MANUFACTURER PROMOTES EXEC

DOUGLAS I. PAYNE has been named senior vice president-finance and administration at Stanley Furniture Co. Inc. He will oversee the information systems and human resource functions of the company in addition to handling the financial responsibilities he already holds.

Payne joined Stanley in 1983 as manager of accounting. He has held various financial positions since then, most recently vice president of finance.

Before joining the furniture manufacturer, he was a certified public accountant in the Atlanta office of Coopers & Lybrand, where he handled the Stanley account.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

CHRISTOPHER HANLON of Roanoke has been appointed director of financial aid at Immaculata College in Chester County, Pa. Hanson was in financial aid management at Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley from 1992 to 1993 and at Ferrum College from 1993 to 1996. He also was an adjunct professor of philosophy at Patrick Henry College.

HEALTH CARE

SUSAN DOWDY and DEBORAH BECK recently joined the Southwest Virginia Area Health Education Center in Marion, Dowdy as program coordinator and Beck as administrative assistant. The center promotes health careers and provides access to primary care for medically underserved people.

LAW

JOHN L. BROWNLEE, SCOTT A. JOHNSON, RICHARD F. HAWKINS III and DONALD D. LONG have joined the Roanoke law firm of Woods, Rogers & Hazlegrove. Brownlee previously was a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Samuel G. Wilson of the Western District of Virginia, and was an infantry officer is the U.S. Army. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar. Johnson, who received his law degree from Washington and Lee University, is a member of the Roanoke Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. Hawkins received his law degree from the University of Virginia and is a member of the Roanoke Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. Long, who is working in the firm's Charlottesville and Richmond offices, obtained his law degree from the University of Virginia and is a member of the Charlottesville-Albermarle Bar Association and Virginia State Bar.

MANUFACTURING

DEL RAMSEY has been promoted from controller to vice president-controller of NSW Corp., a packaging products manufacturer in Roanoke. Ramsey, who is a licensed certified public accountant, will be responsible for planning, financial and accounting functions for the corporation.

DONALD AHERON has been appointed assistant manager of the engineering department at Nationwide Homes in Martinsville. In this new position, Aheron will be responsible for reviewing the accuracy of architectural plans and will be a resource for Nationwide Homes builders on all technical questions related to modular systems construction. He will also assist in new product development. He joined the company in 1995 as a processing engineer.

NONPROFITS

JEFF WALKER, former marketing and production manager of Opera Roanoke, has been named director of marketing and public relations at Roanoke's Center in the Square. He succeeds CAROLYN G. NOLAN, who is now grants officer. CHRISSY FRENTZ has joined the cultural center's staff as development/special events assistant. EMILY A. ERLANDSON, who previously worked as the development assistant, has been named development officer.
