AKERS, Opal Ola Phillips, (``Granny""), 81, of 3035 Lee High way, Pulaski, died Saturday, January 4, 1997, in Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Indian Valley (Floyd County) on October 6, 1915, and was the daughter of the late Kyle W. Phillips and Letha Kelly Turpin Phillips Austin Portrey. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Christiansburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Effort Wayne Akers Jr. Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Thelma Jean and Arnold Anderson, and Jo Dot and Wilburn Venable, all of Pulaski; grandchildren and spouses, Debbie and Dean Mabry, and Joey and Gloria Venable, all of Dublin; and four great-grandchildren, Danielle Venable and Tangie Mabry of Dublin, Sean Venable of Laurens, S.C., and Eric Venable of Clemson, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Stevens Funeral Chapel in Pulaski, with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. BLESSARD, Alma Lucille, 79, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 4, 1997 after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late William Jackson Rucker and Maggie Mae Rucker. Mrs. Blessard was preceded in death by her husband, Myrl Evans Blessard. Surviving are three sons and their wives, Jessie E. and Dora Jean Blessard of Roanoke, J.R. (Butch) and Sandy Blessard of Roanoke, William H. (Peanut) and Linda Blessard of Salem; six daughters and their husbands, Alma Lois King and Frank E. of Roanoke, Charlotte Jean Flowers Thomas and William of Roanoke Co., Mildred (Millie) Divers and George Wayne (Joe) of Boones Mill, Patricia Millehan and Richard J. and special friend, Frankie Carter of Roanoke Co., Sue Meador and Buddy of Hollins, Shirley Robinson and Joseph Lee of Salem; one sister, Pernie Goodwin of Roanoke Co.; 30 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-granchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and a special friend, Mildred Elkins of Salem. BOLLING, William C., Jr., (``W. C.""), 74, of Vinton, died Sunday, January 5, 1997, at his home. He was a Naval Air veteran of World War II, a former employee of Auto Spring and Bearing Company, and retired from NAPA W arehouse, Roanoke. He was a member of Vinton Baptist Church and former treasurer of the Vinton Senior Citizens Club. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Wood Bolling. Surviving are his wife, Flonnie Jeter Bolling; a son, Charles Clifton (``Pat"") Bolling of Vinton; sisters, Vera Bolling Perdue and Veola Bolling Poff of Roanoke; a stepson and wife, Cameron and Cindy McGuire, and stepgrandsons, Brendan, Devin and Quinn, all of Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, with the Rev. Dr. WIlliam L. Ross officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. CALDWELL, Catherine Mundy, 87, of Buchanan, died Saturday, January 4, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Boyd Caldwell, and a son, Warren Howard Caldwell. She is survived by a daughter, Peggy C. Jenkins of Buchanan; one grandson, Brent Jenkins of Buchanan; a number of nieces and nephews, and other family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 1997, at the Rader Buchanan Chapel, with Dr. W. L. Crane officiating. Interment will follow in Springwood Baptist Ch urch Cemetery. CALDWELL, Edith H., 68, of 1205 Valleyview Dr., Pearisburg, died quietly Sunday, January 5, 1997 at her home. Born in Narrows, Va. on October 2, 1928 she was the daughter of the late Ruth Johnson Fletcher and Fernand Hale and stepdaughter of the late George Everette Fletcher. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pembroke and was the retired office manager of Pembroke Telephone Co-operative. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward E. Caldwell Sr. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward E. Caldwell Jr. and Jayne Wizorek Caldwell of Roanoke and Curtis W. and Debbie Britts Caldwell of Pembroke; four grandchildren, Earnie Caldwell and Chris Caldwell of Roanoke and Scott and Joey Caldwell of Pembroke; one brother, Paul E. Hale Sr. of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 1997 in the First United Methodist Church of Pembroke with the Rev. Max Brown and the Rev. COOPER, Clovis King, 83, of Bent Mountain, passed away Friday, January 3, 1997 at her home. She was the owner and operator of the Pantry Restaurant at Bent Mountain. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Cooper; brother, James N. King and a sister, Gladys King Reid. Survivors include one son, Howard D. Cooper, Spartanburg, S.C.; three grandsons, Lt. Cmdr. John H. Cooper, Newport, R.I., Brian L. Cooper, Spartanburg, S.C., Dwayne A. Cooper, Greenville, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Julianne Cooper, Spartanburg, S.C.; special nephew, James N. King II, Roanoke; two special nieces, Carolyn Young and Sallie Grubb both of Roanoke; special friend, Marbrie Worrell, Bent Mountain; also several other nieces and nephews survive. HARRISON, Mitchell Woodrow, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 5, 1997. Mr. Harrison was retired from Morgan-Eubank Furniture Company, with 30 years of service. He was a Past Exalter Ruler of Roanoke Lodge #197, B.P.O.E. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Larimer Harrison, and is survived by three daughters, Judith Harrison, Sue Harrison and Mary Jane Harrison, all of Roanoke; five brothers, Melvin Harrison, Claude Harrison, Elmer Kingery, Arlie Kingery and Johnny Kingery; two sisters, Christine Sexton and Irene Vickers, and a special friend, Dottie Elliot. A memorial service will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel at 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 1997, with Dr. Philip West officiating. HAWLEY, Clyde Wesley, Sr., 60, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, January 4, 1997, in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Hawley was born in Lorain, Ohio, on January 4, 1937, and was a son of the late Clyde James Hawley and Kathryn Rensemer Hawley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Glenn and David Hawley. He is survived by his wife, Helen Farrell Hawley of Pearisburg; sons and daughter-in-law, Clyde Wesley Hawley Jr. and Beth Hawley of Freeport, N.Y., and Glenn Hawley of Richmond; daughters and son-in-law, Eileen Hawley Ward of Pearisburg, and Lois Hawley Foley and Dr. Timothy Foley of Rockville, Md.; sister and brother-in-law, Lois Hawley Jackson and Howard Jackson of Northfield, Ohio; mother-in-law, Kathleen Ward Ferrell of Las Vegas, Nev., and Rhode Island, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 1997, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg, with the Rev. Louie Benoit officiating. Jones Compton; a brother, Leonard Hayden, and three sisters, Estelle Craighead, Be ssie Johnson and Ida Parker. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Archie W. Jones Jr. and Bobbie Jones of Laurel, Md.; a grandson and wife, Edwin M. and Terry H. NOLEN, Dewey C., 81, of Ferrum, departed this life on Saturday, January 4, 1997 at his residence. He was born on September 3, 1915 and was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth D. Nolen; a brother, Charles Everett Nolen; and a sister, Effie Nolen Rakes. Mr. Nolen retired as sales manager of Ramsey Ford Inc. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Bowling Nolen; his daughter, Eleanor Sue Fulcher and her family, Deborah Fulcher Joyce and her husband, Barry Joyce and their son, Adam, Jeffrey and Renee Fulcher, John Calvert Fulcher and Sonya Compton; his daughter, Jane Nolen Matherly and her husband, Lynn Matherly and their family, Dr. Celeste Michele Matherly and her husband, Stephen Coleman, Jalyn Nolen Matherly Daniels and her son, Bryor; his son, Johnny D. PRILLAMAN, Genoa Turner, 95, of Henry, died Saturday, January 4, 1997. A daughter of the late Josiah and Lucinda Ramsey Turner, Mrs. Prillaman was preceded in death by her husband, Sam H. Prillaman; one son, James M. Prillaman; one daughter, Betty Sue Prillaman, and one grandson, Michael Lee Carter. Mrs. Prillaman attended the School for the Deaf and Blind and Staunton, and was a longtime member of the Evangelistic House of Prayer in Ferrum. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Isabelle and T. E. Jamison, and Alice and H. B. Thompson, all of Martinsville, Virginia and Lewis Webb of Callaway, and Ruth and Raymond Carter of Henry; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. SELBY, Harry T., 66, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, January 4, 1997. He retired from the U.S. Customs Service after 25 years. SEMONES, Gentry Wilson, 72, of Hillsville, died Saturday, January 4, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. He was a retired auto body repairman and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a lifelong member of Hillsville VFW and First Baptist Church of Hillsville. He was the son of the late Johnson Gentry and Mary Susan Semones. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Jeff Semones and E. O. (``Mutt"") Semones. Survivors include his wife, Lois N. Semones; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda Semones-Lewis and Ken Lewis of Virginia Beach, and Sandra and John Lewis of Leesburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Betty Semones of Salem, Neil Semones of Lake Norman, N.C., and Larry and Sarah Semones of Smith Mountain Lake; two granddaughters, Kim Swanson and Sheri Price; seven grandsons, Michael, Mitchell, Brandon and Wayne Semones, Marshall and Justin Lewis and Billy Regal; two sisters, Mary Lee Holmes of Vinton and Willa Dean Gemmell of Alabama, and numerous nieces and nephews. SNAVELY, William Luther, (``Bill""), 78, of 600 Fairview Rd., Wytheville, died Saturday, January 4, 1997 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe Co., the son of the late Frank & Lena Baumgardner Snavely. Mr. Snavely was a life time member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat where he served as a councilman and trustee, a past member of the Wythe Co. Rescue Squad, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a shop foreman at New Car Dealerships in Wythe & Smyth Counties for over 50 years. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Hurt Snavely of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa Snavely of Marion; two granddaughters, Kara Snavely and Ashley Snavely; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Ray Dossett of Morehead City, N.C.; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Robert and Caroline Hurt of Smithfield; four stepgrandsons, Keith and Todd Dossett, Darden and Robby Hurt; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Megan Dossett. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m Tuesday, January 7, 1997 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger, the Rev. Norman Wilhoit, and Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. SNIDER, Mildred Louise Lawson, 69, of Radford, passed away Sunday, January 5, 1997. She was born January 13, 1927 the daughter of the late Columbus Ballard Thomasson Lawson and Mary Susie Mills Lawson. She is survived by her husband, John Robert Snider; daughter, Mary Louise Williamson and husband, Joe of Vinton; sons, Danny Lee Lawson and wife, Rolanda of Bluefield, W.Va., James Ferrell Lawson of Radford; sister, Mary Snider of South Carolina; brother, Frank Lawson of Roanoke; grandchildren, Pat Wray and husband, Tim of Boones Mill, Shirl Light and husband, Chuck of Roanoke, Ruby Pond and husband, Ricky of Roanoke, Sandy Osborne and husband, Mike of Roanoke, Joey Williamson and wife, Dana of Vinton, Cindy Wilson, Ronald Simpkins, Lisa Darnell, Bryan Simpkins; great-grandchildren, Tori Wray, Brittany Wray, Kayla Light, Cody Light, Justin Pond, Jacob Pond, Lauren Osborne, Corey Osborne, Chelsey Harless, and Brittany Poff. ST. CLAIR, Evelyn Hamblin, 73, of 1314 Park Street, Bedford, died Saturday, January 4, 1997 in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 13, 1923 in Montcalm, W. Va. a daughter of the late Alfred Lee Hamblin and Rosa Stafford Hamblin. She was a member of Suck Spring Baptist Church, member of the church choir and taught the Adult Sunday School Class. She retired as a secretary with Sam Moore Furniture for 35 years. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, George Malcolm St. Clair, Bedford; one brother, Curtis Lee Hamblin, Pearisburg; four nephews and one niece. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 1997 at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry M. Parr and the Rev. Jack Miller officiating. THOMASSON, Hubert, 93, of Goodview, passed away at his home on Sunday morning, January 5, 1997. He was the son of the late Tom and Ora Meadows Thoma sson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zella Thomasson June 30, 1996. VERNON, Glenna Pugh, 83, of Marion, died Sunday, January 5, 1997, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Mrs. Vernon was born October 19, 1913, in Grayson County. She attended Johnson Memorial Nursing School and graduated in 1935. She served the public as a Registered Nurse for 46 years. She was the widow of C. H. Vernon. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Sam and Gail Vernon of Marion; one brother, B. Jack Pugh of Lynchburg; two grandsons, David and Neal; one granddaughter, Anna, and one stepgrandchild, Chad. Funeral services for Glenna Pugh Vernon will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, from Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Carol Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Monday evening at the funeral home. The family requests that flowers be omitted and donations be made to Marion Life Saving Crew or The Laurel Springs Church. Barnett's Funeral Home of Marion is handling arrangements.

VIPPERMAN, Elder James Madison, 90, of Route 1, Meadows of Dan, died Saturday night, January 4, 1997, at Patrick County Memorial Hospital. He was an Elder and Moderator of several Primitive Baptist Churches in the area from 1931 to the present, including his home church, Conner's View and Dobyn's Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to his many years of preaching, he worked as a carpenter and farmer. In 1989, Mr. Vipperman received the Distinguished Service Award, presented by the Patrick County Jaycees. He was born in Patrick County to the late Elder Charlie Allen Vipperman and the late Mary Jones Vipperman. He also was preceded in death by five brothers; five sisters, and one great-grandson, Christopher Bradford. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Beulah Lillian Wood Vipperman, a resident of Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart; one daughter, Mrs. Gilmer (Ruth) Vaughn of Stuart; two sons, Rev. Wayne Vipperman and wife Josephine of Salem, and Coy Vipperman and wife Gertrude of Meadows of Dan; one sister, Lora Pendleton of Reidsville, N.C.; eight granddaughters; 13 great-grandchildren, and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services for Elder Vipperman will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 1997, at C onner's View Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Oscar Harris and Elder Edward Bowman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and other times at the home of his daughter, Ruth Vaughn.
