PATRICK HENRY ROLLS BEHIND BATTLE

Boo Battle took charge in the second half as Patrick Henry cruised past E.C. Glass 72-63 on Tuesday night in a non-district boys' game in Lynchburg.

Battle scored 25 of his game-high 31 points after intermission, and the Patriots (8-2) led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter.

The Hilltoppers (4-6) closed to 62-59 with 1:30 left, but Malik Shareef's layup ignited a 10-4 closing run for PH.

Ronnie Kasey hit four free throws, followed by dunks from Battle and Colby Leftwich, in the Patriots' spurt.

Glass was paced by Telly Tucker with 25 points.

Floyd County 77, Glenvar 65: The Buffaloes used a balanced attack to turn back the Highlanders in a Three Rivers District game in Floyd.

Travis Cantrell (23 points), Jason Dalton (22), Derek Saunders (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Adam Harris (14) led the way for Floyd County. Dalton had 14 points in the first quarter as the Buffaloes bolted to a 25-6 lead.

Glenvar got 18 points from Chris Evans and 16 from Josh Williamson.

Salem 85, Alleghany 65: The Spartans pulled away in the second half to pick up a Blue Ridge District victory over the visiting Mountaineers.

Salem (4-5, 3-1) won the third quarter 23-11 to take a 17-point lead into the final period. Sam Lazzaro and Kwam Lewis led the Spartans with 17 points each and Eric Grinnell added 14.

Alleghany (3-6, 1-3) got a game-high 24 points from Casey Burks.

James River 68, Covington Boys' Home 61: Jimmy Thompson scored six of his 11 points in the 19-point fourth quarter as the Knights prevailed in Buchanan.

Travis Blankenship and Phillip Meador scored 16 points apiece to pace James River (4-6), which led 35-31 at the half. Blankenship grabbed 10 rebounds for the Knights.

Chris Hampton scored 30 points and Heath Branch added 12 for Covington Boys' Home (4-4).

Rockbridge County 74, Lord Botetourt 65: The Widcats scored the game's first 15 points and cruised to a Blue Ridge District victory in Lexington.

Rockbridge (2-7 overall, 2-2 district) hit four 3-pointers before the Cavaliers scored more than two minutes into the first period. Ricky Wright led the Wildcats with 17 points and Brian Rowsey had 16. Jason Hannah, who had four 3-pointers, added 12.

Botetourt (6-3, 1-3) was paced by Michael Yates' 20-point performance. Jason Hunt scored 19.

Lynchburg Christian 67, Roanoke Valley Christian 56: Jody Jones scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs' defensive pressure carried them past the Eagles in a Virginia Independent Conference game in Lynchburg.

Nathaniel Garrett paced Lynchburg Christian (5-6, 4-2) with 14 points and Nick Baker added 11. Lynchburg Christian took the lead with less than three minutes remaining, and RVC (7-3, 5-2) couldn't capitalize from the free-throw line.

David Sunheim scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter for Lynchburg. Brad Hutchins paced the Eagles with 29 points and Justin Hurt added 10.

Fuqua 61, North Cross 58: Whitney Southall scored 20 points and John Snoddy added 10 as visiting Fuqua held off the Raiders.

Fuqua (5-7) led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter.

Brandon LaCroix had 18 points to pace four North Cross scorers in double figures. Michael Stoeckle had 13 points, Jeff Baetz 12 and David Foster 10. Baetz also pulled down 12 rebounds for North Cross (3-3).

Girls

Roanoke Valley Christian 56, Lynchburg Christian 23: Gina Guthrie scored 23 points and Rebecca Bryant had 13 points and 15 rebounds as the Eagles (9-3, 3-1) won a Blue Ridge Conference game in Lynchburg.

North Cross 48, Timberlake Christian 32: Ann Ballenger and Michele Hamilton combined for 29 points to lead the Raiders to their first victory of the season in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

E.C. Glass 50, Patrick Henry 25: The Hilltoppers were twice as good as the Patriots as visiting E.C. Glass (3-6) rolled to a non-district victory.

Tanisha Durham and Keeda Hale scored six points each for PH (3-6).

Holy Cross 56, Roanoke Catholic 25: Marie Gamis scored 20 points as the Gaels overpowered the Celtics in a non-conference matchup.

Christy Hinman paced Roanoke Catholic with 17 points, but the Celtics (1-7) were overmatched. They fell behind 14-2 after the first quarter and trailed 28-12 at the break.

Holy Cross (8-2) won the battle of the boards 41-32, although Katie Dennehy grabbed nine rebounds for the Celtics.
