CLEMSON TAKES OFFENSE, FIRES COORDINATOR

Clemson football coach Tommy West has fired offensive coordinator Darrell Moody, ending a fractious, one-year experiment with the Tigers' attack.

``It was something that just didn't work out,'' Moody said Tuesday. ``I'll tell you one thing, though: I won't ever be a coordinator again unless I have control.''

Moody, who moved to Clemson from North Carolina this past spring, said he accepted the job without knowing what position he would coach, then was told he would work with quarterbacks.

``Two days later,'' Moody said, ``they told me I'd be the offensive coordinator. I had the title of offensive coordinator, but I was running the old Clemson offense.''

* The NCAA has listed eight charges of rules violations against Grambling State and given the school until Feb.24 to respond.

The charges include ``lack of institutional control'' over its football program to illegal contact with recruits and offering money to athletes, spokesman Scott Boatwright said.

The charges center mainly on the football program run by Eddie Robinson, college football's winningest coach, who was under pressure to resign following a season of problems for his team on and off the field.

* Former Virginia Tech kicker Atle Larsen signed a one-year contract with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
