The split in the Montgomery County School Board appeared alive and kicking Tuesday night as the board selected its leaders.
By a 5-4 vote, it chose present Chairwoman Annette Perkins to lead for another year. The vote mirrored the split between School Board members elected last fall who did not support Superintendent Herman Bartlett and those who were appointed by the Board of Supervisors and did support him.
In October, after three controversial years, Bartlett was denied a contract extension. That 5-4 vote split along similar lines.
His term will end in June.
Perkins, who represents the area northeast of Blacksburg, has been a vocal opponent of Bartlett since he was hired.
Recently, some board members have criticized Perkins for not being an effective leader. School Board Vice Chairman Barry Worth is one of those with whom she has often butted heads.
Tuesday night, member Jim Klagge nominated Worth to continue as vice chairman, but Worth declined, saying it was "because of some things that happened this year."
Worth in turn nominated Dave Moore, who represents Christiansburg. Moore, the only board member who is black, has shown his frustration with Perkins by speaking out and leaving meetings early.
Klagge then nominated Roy Vickers, a former chairman, but he declined. Moore was nominated as vice chairman unanimously.
