ALBERT, Helen Whitescarver, 101, of Longshop, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997, at her home. She was born on February 27, 1895 in Salem to the late John and Rosa Birchfield Whitescarver; and was also preceded in death by her husband, Harvey ``Cal'' Burnett Albert. Mrs. Albert is survived by a daughter, Nancy A. Albert, Longshop; a son, Harvey B. Albert Jr., Clifton Forge; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 1997, at Shiloh Lutheran Church, Longshop, with the Rev. Don McKinney and Rev. Bobby E. Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in the Albert Family Cemetery, Longshop. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Albert Family Cemetery Fund, c/o Juel M. ASHCRAFT, Robert Lynn, Captain, U.S. Navy (Ret.), 75, of Roanoke, died Saturday, January 4, 1997. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 8. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Interment will be in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery. BUSSEY, Helen Martin, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997. Mrs. Bussey attended Longwood College and graduated from Radford College with a Bachelor of Science degree. She was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Judy Smith Circle, was a member of the Roanoke Business Womens Association and was a member of the Working Women On Their Own, and was active in several bridge clubs. She was the widow of Lewis Keith Bussey Jr., and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Rodney G. Bussey-Spencer of Memphis, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Mary (``Mollie"") Bussey-Spencer and Walker Briles Bussey-Spencer; her sisters and brother-in-law, Mrs. George W. (Gladys) Taylor of Kingsport, Tenn., and Ruby Martin and Charles T. Moses Jr. of Appomattox; her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Seward (Gwen) Dickens of Halifax, N.C., Mrs. Paul (Elizabeth) Webster of Rocky Mount, and Sue Wallace and her husband Rev. John Wallace of Boones MIll, also numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, with the Rev. Don Carlton, the Rev. Bryan Oldham and the Rev. D. Michael Meloy officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Franklin County. CRAWFORD, Patricia M., a teacher of English at Virginia Western Community College from 1969 to 1979, died at her home in Roanoke on Thursday, December 26, 1996. Born in 1908 in Lewiston, Idaho, Mrs. Crawford took degrees at the University of Oregon and Washington State University before moving to Massachusetts with her husband, the late Theodore R. Crawford, in 1934. Thirty-five years later, in 1969, having raised a family and taught in the Norwood, Mass. public schools as well as at Chamberlayne Junior College in Boston, she accepted a teaching appointment at Virginia Western and came to live in Roanoke with her husband, who was by then ill and unable to work. After her retirement from Virginia Western in 1979, she continued to live in Roanoke until her death. Predeceased by her husband in 1985, she is survived by three children, Susan Crawford Fischer, James Crawford, and Catherine Crawford Ray; and six grandchildren. A service commemorating her life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2015 Grandin Road, Roanoke, on Sunday, January 19, 1996, at 5:30 p.m.

FOX, Charlie Vaden, 79, of Buena Vista, went to be with the Lord Monday, January 6, 1997, at the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born in Buena Vista on August 14, 1917, he was a son of the late Charlie Hansford and Lillie Bell Dudley Fox. Before retirement, he was an electrician for the City of Buena Vista. He attended the First Brethren Church. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cassie Cash and Mary Bush. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Bartley Fox; two sisters, Hester Spangler and Ruby Campbell, both of Lexington; and a host of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 1997, at the Lomax Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Bearinger and the Rev. James Smals officiating. HODGES, Laura Louise, 66, of Richfield Nursing Center, Salem, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997. She was predeceased by her parents, Howard O. and Gracie Hodges; and a sister, Kathleen K. Willingham. HORTON, Laura Elizabeth, 93, of Woodlawn, passed away Monday, January 6, 1997 in Twin County Regional Hospital. She was born June 2, 1903 in Carroll County, daughter of the late Jeff Moore and Pauline Roseberry Moore. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Gertrude Goad, Hillsville, Alta Sumner, Woodlawn, Allene and Ivan Shockley, Hillsville, Opalene and Chester Combs, Mt. Airy, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Alta Horton, Hillsville, Clearin and Lovelene Horton, Hillsville, Clyde and Pauline Horton, Woodlawn; two sisters, Beatrice Hancock, Draper, Louise Yearby, St. Louis, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren. KING, Frank, 87, of Woodlawn, died Monday, January 6, 1997, in ElderCare of Hillsville. Mr. King was born October 3, 1909, to Joseph King and Alice Poole King. In addition to his parents, Mr. King was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel King. He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nancy C. Morris, Hillsville, Barbara and Bill Slate, Galax, Betty Jo and Jimmy Griffin, Woodlawn; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. MARTIN, Clara Meador, 82, of Bedford, formerly of Moneta, passed away Monday, January 6, 1 997, at her residence. She was born April 12, 1914 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late General Jackson Meador and Fannie May Miller Meador. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Henry Martin; and a daughter, Isebell M. Perdue. She was a member of the Diamond Hill United Methodist Church. She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Lowena M. Martin, Linda F. Martin, Jean and Wendell Whorley, all of Bedford; a son, Floyd L. Martin, Vinton; a grandson, Mark Whorley, Bedford; five sisters, Courtney Davidson, Bertha Martin, both of Bedford, Virginia Hurt, Moneta, Odell Richardson, Everline Emerson, both of Martinsville; a brother, Kenneth Meador, Martinsville. MARTIN, James Dennis, 91, of Floyd, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 7, 1997. He was the son of the late William and Lillie Martin of Check. He was a member of the Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Erma Graham Martin; two nieces, Irene J. Sisson of Warrenton a nd Naomi W. Creed of Locust Grove; a nephew, Harlie L. Martin of Check; devoted friends, Donald McLane and Priscilla M. Whitlock of Floyd; several other nieces and nephews. McCORMICK, Winifred Mae Nelson, (``Mickey''), 72, of Pearisburg, died Monday, January 6, 1997, at her home. Mrs. McCormick was born i n Bland on July 26, 1924, and was a daughter of the late Ira and Vinie Hull Nelson. Mrs. McCormick was a member of the First Christian Church in Pearisburg and was a member of the Women's Fellowship in the church. She is survived by her husband, Richard B. McCormick of Pearisburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard Wayne and Rena McCormick of Dalmatia, Pa.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kitty and Charles Cline of Dayton, Connie and Dale Sartin of Eggleston; three brothers, Glen Nelson of Narrows, Clayton Nelson of Bland, Bernard Nelson of Louisville, Ky.; two grandsons, Ethan Dale Sartin and Brian Allen McCormick. MUNDY, Helen Newcomb, 72, of Eagle Rock, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997. Mrs. Mundy was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Clay Mundy Sr., on December 26, 1996. She had retired from Groendyk Manufacturing Co. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Morris Clay Mundy Jr., Vinton, John W. and Kathy W. Mundy, Eagle Rock, Otho Lee and Terry C. Mundy, Eagle Rock; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. NAFF, Euell Walker, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, January 6, 1997, one day before his 64th birthday. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Clytie Jamison Naff and Robert Chester Naff Sr. Mr. Naff is survived by his wife of nearly 37 years, Martha Ann Peake Naff; one son, R. Leighton Naff; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert C. Naff Jr. and Nancy Hudson Naff, Boones Mill; one brother-in-law, Frank L. Peake Jr. and his wife, Genie, Asheville, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Martha Holland Peake, Rocky Mount; two nephews; and many cousins. Mr. Naff was employed by the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Boones Mill and the Peoples National Bank of Rocky Mount (which later merged) for almost 40 years, having served on the board of directors and as president for over 12 years. He served on the board of directors of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and on the board of directors of the American Cancer Society for Franklin County. He was a member of the Boones Mill Lions Club. Mr. Naff was a member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church for over 30 years, having served as Chairman of the Finance Committee, as Treasurer, as a member of the Board of Stewarts, and as Treasurer of the Men's Club. He was a member and Chairman of the Rocky Mount Planning Commission. Euell was an avid ruffed grouse hunter and was a member of the Ruffed Grouse Society for well over 25 years. Services will be conducted by the Reverend William K. Dawson at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 9, at 11 a.m. with burial in High Street Cemetery. NICHOLS, Lonzie William, 87, of Roanoke and formerly of Floyd, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997, at Friendship Manor. Surviving are his wife, Ora Turner Nichols; two daughters and sons-in-law, Venda Gayle and Bobby Boothe, and Audrey and Eugene Cahill, all of Roanoke; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren, and one sister, Okie Guilliams of Roanoke. SIMMONS, Thelma Ferris, 94 of Roanoke passed away Tuesday, January 7, 1997. She was the widow of Arthur Wayne Simmons and was a member of the Hollins Road Baptist Church. STALEY, Dr. J. Stuart, 90, of Marion, died Monday, January 6, 1997, at his home. He was born in Elkhorn, W.Va. on November 12, 1906, the son of the late Nannie Frazier Staley and David Denton Staley. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and Tulane University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his residency and internship, Dr. Staley returned to Marion and opened Homeland Hospital, the first hospital in Marion. During World War II, he served in both the North African and European theaters and was awarded the Legion of Merit for his meritorious service. Dr. Staley served from 1947 to 1953 as a medical missionary in India. In the mid 1950's, he purchased Lee Memorial Hospital and operated it until the early 1960's, when his dream of a modern hospital facility came to fruition with community support and leadership in the establishment of Smyth County Community Hospital. He was active in community affairs and served as mayor of Marion. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Thomas Staley of Marion; two sons, Joseph Stuart Staley Jr. and Emmitt Denton Staley, both of Marion; eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 9, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. J. N. Howard and Dr. Sheldon Sorge officiating. Private burial will follow. STANLEY, Carol Overstreet, 55, of 717 Burks Hill Road, Bedford, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997, in the University of Virginia Hospital. She was born in Bedford County on September 27, 1941, a daughter of the late Rufus Floyd Overstreet and Verna Gertrude Orange Overstreet. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Jeffery Carter. She was a member of Cool Spring Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Chester Wayman Stanley of Bedford; two sons, Obie Lewis Carter Jr. of Bedford and Timothy Davis Carter of Sutherlin; a granddaughter, Brianna Michelle Carter of Richmond; one sister, Sarah O. Parker of Thaxton; a niece, Patricia Davidson of Concord, and; two special aunts, Beulah Furgurson of Williamsburg and Virginia Powers of Madison Heights. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 1997, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Geoff Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Carliss and Maggie Woolwine, Randy and Marie Woolwine, Jay and Peggy Woolwine, all of Christiansburg, M ark and Clara Woolwine, Dennis Woolwine, all of Blacksburg; one daughter, Rita Kytchen, Blacksburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Alex and Billie Linkous, Blacksburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Sadie and Charles Huff, Blacksburg;13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; special friends, Elsie Woodyard, Rosezonda Hudgins, Kathy Bennett, and all the hospice staff.
