Raymond Arrington scored almost half of Liberty's points Tuesday night in Martinsville. The reigning Group AA boys' basketball champion needed every one of them.
The Minutemen overcame a 12-point halftime deficit as Arrington finished with 39 points in an 80-78 non-district victory.
Arrington not only had eight 3-point goals in the game, he scored 16 of Liberty's 24 points in the fourth quarter, including six free throws to cap the comeback for the Minutemen (8-1).
Jason Wells and Leander Preston scored 18 points apiece for the Bulldogs (3-5), who led 46-34 at halftime.
Floyd County 77, Glenvar 65: The Buffaloes used a balanced attack to turn back the Highlanders in a Three Rivers District game in Floyd.
Travis Cantrell (23 points), Jason Dalton (22), Derek Saunders (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Adam Harris (14) led the way for Floyd County. Dalton had 14 points in the first quarter as the Buffaloes bolted to a 25-6 lead.
Glenvar got 18 points from Chris Evans and 16 from Josh Williamson.
Radford 59, Auburn 46: Andrew Crowder scored 10 first-quarter points and hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Bobcats built an early 13-point lead and won the Three Rivers District opener for both teams.
Crowder finished with 16 points on the game for Radford (5-2), while Tony Hash added 14 and John Robertson 13.
Auburn is 2-6.
Rockbridge County 74, Lord Botetourt 65: The Widcats scored the game's first 15 points and cruised to a Blue Ridge District victory in Lexington.
Rockbridge (2-7 overall, 2-2 district) hit four 3-pointers before the Cavaliers scored more than two minutes into the first period. Ricky Wright led the Wildcats with 17 points and Brian Rowsey had 16. Jason Hannah, who had four 3-pointers, added 12.
Botetourt (6-3, 1-3) was paced by Michael Yates' 20-point performance. Jason Hunt scored 19.
Carroll County 65, Grayson County 60: Scott Goins scored 21 points and made six free throws in the final 1:30 to save the Cavaliers in a non-district game in Hillsville.
Carroll County (4-7) won despite making only 10 of 34 free throws. The Cavaliers missed the first 11 foul shots of the fourth quarter, but won behind 18 points from Jeremy Ogle and 16 from Travis Harvey.
Chad McMillian scored 17 for Grayson County (6-2) and Derrick Phipps and Wes Self added 16 each.
Salem 85, Alleghany 65: The Spartans pulled away in the second half to pick up a Blue Ridge District victory over the visiting Mountaineers.
Salem (4-5, 3-1) won the third quarter 23-11 to take a 17-point lead into the final period. Sam Lazzaro and Kwam Lewis led the Spartans with 17 points each and Eric Grinnell added 14.
Alleghany (3-6, 1-3) got a game-high 24 points from Casey Burks.
Fieldale-Collinsville 50, Staunton River 37: Marco Taylor scored 14 points as the Cavaliers used a pressing defense in the second half to pull away for a non-district victory over the Golden Eagles in Collinsville.
Matt Roberts led Staunton River with 16 points. Lamont Perkins added 10 for Fieldale-Collinsville.
Bland 64, Narrows 57: Lee Meadows scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half to lead the Rockets past the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District matchup in Narrows.
John Thompson added 14 points to Bland's effort as the Rockets (7-2, 2-0) outscored Narrows 21-16 in the final quarter.
Joe Shipbaugh and Dalton Smith each had 12 points for the Green Wave (4-3, 0-2).
Graham 80, Pulaski County 51: The G-Men used a 33-point second quarter to beat the Cougars (5-3) in a non-district game in Bluefield.
Graham (9-1) was led by Jeff Lynch's 19 points, six rebounds and six steals.
Giles 64, Shawsville 41: The Spartans took a 13-point halftime lead and won the Three Rivers District opener for the two schools on the Shawnees' court.
Adam Jones with 14 points and Robbie Claytor with 13 led Giles (6-3, 1-0). Shawsville is 1-7, 0-1.
Gateway Christian 58, Victory Christian 55, OT: The Crusaders rallied in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, then outscored the Saints in the extra session to win a non-district game in Blacksburg.
Chris Kirtner led Gateway Christian (5-4) with 20 points, Allen Surface added 17 and Brad Duncan 16.
Victory Christian, from Beckley, W.Va., had a nine-point lead entering the final quarter. The Saints got 14 points from Michael Fizer.
Highland 59, Circleville (W.Va.) 47: Bryan Werner scored 23 points and Jacob Hull added 16 as the unbeaten Rams (6-0 overall) won a non-league game over the visitors from West Virginia.
Carlisle 69, Timberlake Christian 67, 2 OT: Chad Martin hit a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer of the second overtime, lifting the Chiefs to a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the visitors from Lynchburg. Marty Stanley's 23 points led the Chiefs.
James Monroe (W.Va.) 83, Covington 59: The Cougars (2-6) traveled to West Virginia and rode home with a lopsided loss to the Mavericks.
Erwin Twitty led Covington with 14 points.
Laurel Park 65, Gretna 48: Jeff Slade had 24 points, eight rebounds and four blocks as the Lancers downed the Hawks in a non-district game in Martinsville.
Tony Carter added 12 points to help Laurel Park (8-1).
Roger Younger and Jay Patrick each had 13 points for Gretna.
James River 68, Covington Boys' Home 61: Jimmy Thompson scored six of his 11 points in the 19-point fourth quarter as the Knights prevailed in Buchanan.
Travis Blankenship and Phillip Meador scored 16 points apiece to pace James River (4-6), which led 35-31 at the half. Blankenship grabbed 10 rebounds for the Knights.
Chris Hampton scored 30 points and Heath Branch added 12 for Covington Boys' Home (4-4).
Tunstall 74, Bassett 55: Derrick Rogers scored 26 points, and the Trojans hit their free throws in the fourth quarter to seal a non-district victory over the Bengals in Bassett.
Lashon Adkins and Jermaine Motley added 11 points each for Tunstall, which hit 11 of 14 from the line in the final period.
Andre Fuller led the Bengals with 14 points and Keith Harvey had 12 points.
Rural Retreat 57, Patrick Henry-Glade Spring 45: Wayne Terry scored nearly half of the Indians' points in a Hogoheegee District victory over the Rebels in Rural Retreat.
Terry led all scorers with 28 points as the Indians (1-5, 1-1) picked up their first victory of the season.
Travis Farmer led PH (2-3, 1-1) with 11 points.
Fort Chiswell 89, Pocahontas 56: Derrick Jackson had 12 points to lead four scorers in double figures as the Pioneers ripped the Indians in a Mountain Empire District matchup in Fort Chiswell.
The Pioneers (5-3, 2-0) also got 11 points from Heath Bralley and Steve Swecker and 10 points from Jason Porter. Fort Chiswell's tough man-to-man defense helped it take a 46-15 halftime lead.
Jackson and Porter also grabbed eight rebounds apiece, Richie Nester dished out six assists and Ricky Govin made five steals.
David Murphy scored 27 points for Pocahontas (0-5, 0-3) and Barry Thompson added 11.
Magna Vista 72, Dan River 47: Leander Martin scored 16 points and Chad Blackstock added 12 as the Warriors rolled past the Wildcats in a non-district game in Ringgold.
Alan Heady scored 14 points to lead Dan River.
Patrick County 74, Chatham 55: Corey Reynolds scored 22 of his game-high 30 points from the free-throw line to lead the Cougars (5-4) past the Cavaliers (1-8) in a non-district game in Chatham.
Mario Fitzgerald had 18 points and Travis Hairston added 17 for Chatham.
Girls
Pulaski County 77, Mercer (W.Va.) Christian 51: The Cougars ran to a 20-point halftime lead and never looked back in winning a non-district game in Dublin.
Eleven players scored for Pulaski County (9-1), led by Katrina Williams with 20 points. Mandy Sexton and Missy Shirah each added 10.
Elizabeth Lewis led the Cavaliers (4-6) with 15 points.
