Brokers charged in test-taking scam

NEW YORK - Fifty-three people have been charged in a scam in which stockbrokers allegedly hired impostors to take licensing exams for them, the Manhattan district attorney said Wednesday.

Fifty stockbrokers who work at small securities firms, two ``ringers'' who took the test, and a middle man were charged.

The investigation began 2 1/2 years ago when a proctor at one of the exams thought he recognized the same person taking several tests using various names, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.

One of the test-takers took 28 tests for 17 people, he said; the other took 22 tests for 15 people.

Morgenthau said test-takers are now fingerprinted and videotaped to guard against future fraud.

Chrysler recalls 620,000 vehicles

DETROIT - Chrysler Corp. has recalled 620,000 minivans and cars because of a potentially dangerous defect that can cause the steering wheels to crack and come loose.

The recall covers 1991-92 Dodge Caravans and Grand Caravans, Plymouth Voyager and Grand Voyager minivans, and Dodge Shadow Plymouth Sundance cars with 4-cylinder engines, Chrysler spokeswoman Michelle Tinson said Tuesday.

Chrysler said no accidents or deaths have been reported as a result of the problem.

The steering wheels can come loose over time from severe engine vibration. Tinson said drivers would have plenty of warning if they had the problem.
