VMI's football coaching staff will be convened today to meet with an outside candidate for the school's head coaching vacancy.
The candidate is believed to be one of the following coaches: North Carolina State offensive coordinator Ted Cain, Navy assistant head coach for offense Gene McKeehan or Miami (Ohio) offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson.
The move may indicate that a coach other than the two internal candidates, VMI assistant head coach Donnie Ross and VMI defensive coordinator Chip Garber, will be the Keydets' new head man.
Both VMI assistants returned Wednesday from a coaches' convention in Orlando, Fla., but neither had heard from VMI's search committee as of Wednesday night.
An announcement of the new coach could come as early as this afternoon. VMI officials say they hope to have the new coach in place by at least Monday.
``We're trying to conclude as soon as we can,'' VMI athletic director Davis Babb said Wednesday. ``I hope it's going to be early next week.''
According to sources, as many as 15 candidates have interviewed for the position and some say a decision on the new coach already has been made. Babb, however, said that wasn't the case.
``We're not sitting on any kind of announcement,'' he said.
It is to VMI's advantage to make a decision as soon as possible. This is traditionally the peak time of the football program's recruiting period.
