The Bedford County Sheriff's Office was out in force Wednesday night trying to round up 37 people suspected of dealing crack cocaine in the county and surrounding areas.
The arrests follow a joint six-month investigation with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration that Sheriff Mike Brown is calling Operation Crack-down.
In all, 63 charges have been filed against 41 people authorities characterized as mid-and upper-level dealers who sold drugs in the county as well as Roanoke and Lynchburg, said Lt. John McCane of the Sheriff's Office. The investigation also traced these alleged dealers' sources to Miami, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Washington, D.C.
Four people were in custody Wednesday night, and local, state and federal authorities planned to head out about 9 p.m. to make additional arrests.
