CROFT, Woodrow Wilson, 82, of Route 5, Bedford, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 1997, at his residence. He was born December 21, 1914 in Bedford County, a son of the late John Andrew Croft and Myrtle Wood Croft. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Ashby Croft, Bill Croft, Roy Croft, Jake Croft, John Croft, Earl Croft; and a sister, Callie Croft Key. He was a retired employee of the Rubatex Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Helen Gross Croft; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Josephine and Joe DeWitt, Bedford, Nettie Key, Bedford. DAVIS, Mable Barnette, 86, of Clifton Forge, died Tuesday morning, January 7, 1997, in the Columbia Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor. A daughter of the late Mr. Edward Barnette and Mrs. Ianthia Girty Barnette, she was born October 13, 1910 in Botetourt County, where she attended the public school. The loving and devoted wife of 64 years to James B. Davis Sr. and the mother of their nine children, she was also an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board and participated in community activities. Surviving are her husband, James B. Davis Sr., Clifton Forge; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James B. Davis Jr. (Marlena), Bitburg, Germany, Joseph (Debra) Davis and Jerome Davis, Clifton Forge; six daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. June (Rev. Boyd C.) White, Mrs. Jeanette (Willie) Brown, and Mrs. Jennifer (Alfred) Dearing, all of Clifton Forge, Mrs. Joyce (Carl) Pierce, Hampton, Mrs. Janice (James) Lewis, Cumberland, Md., and Mrs. Jacquelyne (Clinton) Pierce, Roanoke; 37 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Garner, Tucson, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Friends may call at the Davis residence and at Rev. and Mrs. Boyd C. White's residence at any time. The body will be placed in the First Baptist Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, where friends may pay their respects until the 11 a.m. service time. GARDNER, Martin E., 89, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, January 8, 1997, at the Roanoke United Methodist Home. A native of Willis, he was a son of the late Perry and Etta Turman Gardner. He was predeceased by a daughter, Phillip Ann Abshire; and a son-in-law, Robert R. Abshire Sr. A member for 61 years of Oakland Baptist Church, he was a deacon and trustee there for several years. A longtime member of Williamson Road Lions Club, Mr. Gardner was honored as ``Lion of the Year"" in 1989 and 1990. He owned, operated, and retired from the Mick-or-Mack store at Montrose and Seventh St. S.E. Mr. Gardner later retired from sales from Valley Cadillac after 25 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Hazel Phillips Gardner; two grandsons and their wives, Robert R. and Cindy Abshire, Aiken, S.C., Phillip Gardner and Jenny Abshire, Savannah, Ga.; a granddaughter, Catherine C. Abshire, Augusta, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Robert R. Abshire III, Elizabeth Ann Abshire, Phillip Noble Abshire; a sister, Mrs. Alethea Lynch, Miami, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. T. A. HENDERSON, Nina Johnson, 88, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Janu ary 8, 1997, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Mrs. Henderson was the daughter of the late James P. and Cora Counts Johnson of Saltville. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Bill Henderson; one son, John Michael Henderson; two sisters, Lelia Taylor and Beulah Sword; and two brothers, Houston Johnson and G. D. Johnson. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, The Honorable Frederick Lane Hoback Sr. His surviving family include his wife, Susan L. Hoback; his children, Frederick Lane Hoback IV, Benjamin Hale Hoback, all of Richmond; his parents, The Honorable Frederick L. Hoback Jr. and Kathryn G. Hoback, of Salem; a brother, Kirk S. Hoback; a sister, Mary N. Hoback, both of Salem; a grandmother, Louise V. Hoback, also of Salem. HUFFMAN, James Marshall, 81, of Pearisburg, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997 in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital. Mr. Huffman was born on December 10, 1915 in Newport, Va. and was a son of the late Marshall C. and Mary Duncan Huffman. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Ralph, Martin and Fred, and a sister, Thelma. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Eloise Denton Huffman, Pearisburg; one daughter, Joyce H. Brumback, Greensboro, N. C.; one son, David E. Huffman, Sr., Bridgeport, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Candace Raynor, Bill Raynor, Jamie L. Huffman, David E. Huffman, Jr.; two stepgrandchildren, Ciri Birch, Scott Raynor. James was a life long resident of Giles County, and was an active member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Trustee. He was Master Mason of Giles Lodge #106 in Pearisburg for over 50 years. He was a loving and caring husband and father. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 10, 1997 at 2 p.m. in the Pearisburg Baptist Church with the Rev. H. Gray Smith officiating, with interment in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. JACKSON, Geraldine H., 79, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 7, 1997. For several years Mrs. Jackson was a resident of Rainbow Forest, and more recently resided at the Roanoke United Methodist Home. She was the widow of William B. Jackson, and a member of Melrose United Methodist Church. Surviving are four children, Bernard D. Stevenson, Wirtz, Thomas D. Stevenson, San Diego, Calif., Margery J. Wingenbach, Winchester, and Joseph B. Jackson, Chesapeake; a brother, Charles W. Houchins, Mt. Prospect, Ill.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. JONES, Jason Douglas, 88 of Blue Ridge passed away Tuesday, Ja nuary 7, 1997. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Georgia T. Jones and was a member of the Blue Ridge Church of the Brethren. He retired Boxley Quarries after 46 years of service and was a veteran of WW II. Surviving are two daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl J. and LeRoy C. Switzer of Harrisonburg, Mary D. Jones of Blue Ridge; grandson, Brian D. Temples of Harrisonburg; four sisters, Beulah Anderson of Radford, Frances Griggs of Port Charlotte, Fla., Pauline Bowles of Cayce, S.C., Mary Lois Shrader of Narrows; three brothers, Kyle Jones, George R. Jones both of Salem, Donald Jones of Pembroke; also a number of nieces and nephews. JONES, Melvin Jackson, 84, of Callaway, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 1997, at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Born August 16, 1912, he was a son of the late Henry and Addie Martin Jones. KEGLEY, Ruth Brown, 89, wife of the late Judge Pierce C. Kegley, and resident of Bland, died Wednesday, January 8, 1997, after a short illness. She was born in Portsmouth on July 13, 1907, the daughter of James S. and Ethel Miller Brown. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth and Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. She taught in the Bland County School system from 1942 to 1972, and substitute taught for 18 years following her retirement. While at Bland High School, she coached women's basketball and was very involved in directing Drama Club presentations. She helped write and direct the Bland County Bicentennial pageant in 1961, ``Down Through The Ages.'' She also wrote and directed the Bland County Harvest Festival for eleven years. She was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Presbyterian Church and Women of the Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Pierce C. Kegley; and one son, Fulton Brown Kegley. Surviving are one son, Robert Pierce Kegley, Bland; two daughters-in-law, Jessie Davis Kegley, Bland, and Betty Myers Kegley, Staunton; one brother and sister-in-law, Sherwood S. and Virginia Brown of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. A service will be conducted Friday, 10 a.m., at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland. A graveside service will immediately follow at the Kegley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard Havens, Roger Thompson, Wade Blankenship, J. V. Shockley, Gene Dalton and Elmo Sadler. KELLEY, Ruth White, 83, of Route 1, Draper, died Tuesday afternoon, January 7, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville. She was born in Buena Vista on December 26, 1913, and was the daughter of the late Arthur Stuart White and Nettie Sheltman White. She was a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Graham Kelley. Surviving are daughters and son-in-law, Bettie Kirk, Fairlawn, Bennie and Don Pratt, Draper; son and daughter-in-law, Nathaniel Graham and Debbie Kelley, Draper; two sisters, Margaret White, Whitethorne, Nellie Rudisill, Longshop; two brothers, John White, McCoy, William White, White-thorne; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Preston O. Sartelle Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. PERDUE, Alfred Madison, Jr., 69, of Blacksburg, went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness Wednesday, January 7, 1997, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was born on December 9, 1927 in Montgomery County to the late Alfred M. and Grace Doss Perdue Sr. Mr. Perdue was a dedicated member of Harvest Baptist Church and loved to witness for his Lord and was not ashamed of his convictions. He was also a veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post #182, Blacksburg. He was an independent insurance agent in the Blacksburg area for many years. He is survived by his wife, Janis Dickerson Perdue, Blacksburg; a mother-in-law, Ellen G. Dickerson, Blacksburg; sisters-in-law and husbands, Norma D. and Harold F. Wall, Blacksburg, Jewel D. and Robert J. Schoffstall, Fairfield, Calif., Opal D. and Gene Davis, Broadway, Toni D. and James Fain, Independence; several nieces and nephews and many friends; and dear companions, Cherokee, Cody, and Cubbie. Wells, Lafayette; grandchildren, Jimmy and Laura Smith, Whitney and Ashley Wells; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Lottie Smith, Virginia Beach, David and Sue Smith, Salem, Charles and Betty Smith, Bob and Connie Smith, John Henry and Sally Smith, all of Christiansburg, Alfred (``Cotton'') and Nora Smith, Elliston; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille and Jimmy Hall, Louise Long, Sally and Wayne Harman, all of Christiansburg, Marie and Fred White, Roanoke; also surviving are an aunt and uncle, Madeline and Ward Thompson, Riner; uncle, John Smith and wife of Blacksburg; special cousin, Barbara Griffith, Riner; also surviving are many cousins, nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Friday, January 10, 1997 at Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. David Lagerveld officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. SMITH, Jessie Bernard, 85, of Route #1, (State Park Road) Dublin, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 1997, in the Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital. Born January 22, 1911 in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late William Harrison Smith and Fannie Belle Covey Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Roseberry Smith; and a brother, Harry Smith Jr. He was a retired employee of the Appalachian Power Company in the Maintenance Department at the Claytor Lake Dam. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Pat Smith, Dublin; two grandchildren, Donna Smith Miller, David Smith; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Basil (Catherine Ocelia) Bostic, Lewisburg, W.Va., Mrs. Velma Shultz, Dublin, Mrs. Ebb (Mattie) Hall, Dublin. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at the Mountain View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barry L. Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery, Dublin. Visiting will be any time after 1 p.m. Friday and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski, or any time at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Don and Pat Smith, 4639 State Park Road, Dublin. He is survived by his wife, Betty Powers Terry; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Ron Orndorff, Roanoke, Kathy and Kevin Moore, Salem; grandchild, Kelley Marie Moore, Salem; lovable dog, Sam; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ramona T. and Arthur Mabrey, Lynchburg, Darlene T. and Harry Haskins, Salem; brother, Bobby L.
