IN SCHOOL - EAST

TIMOTHY CAMPBELL, son of Peggy Campbell, and NICKY STROCK II, daughter of Lynn Strock, both of Roanoke, are two of 20 high school graduates who have won scholarships from First Union Corp. These scholarships can be up to $4,000 a year for four years.

Winners were chosen from the employees' children and stepchildren based on financial need and academic excellence. This is the first year of First Union's scholarship program.

THE GILES SCHOLASTIC CHESS TOURNAMENT winners include: individual open scholastic - Mark DiProsperis, James Madison Middle School, first place, and Jonathan Tanner, Patrick Henry High School, third place; team - Patrick Henry High School, first place; individual elementary section - Adam Tanner, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, third place; team - Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle School, second place, and Raleigh Court Elementary School, third place; individual elementary beginners - Brock Newton, Crystal Spring Elementary School, first place, and Christina Tiller, Oakland Intermediate School, third place.

The tournament was held in Pearisburg on Nov. 9.
