Preston Park offers square dance lessons

A free western square dancing lesson will be held at Preston Park Recreation Center on Friday at 7:30 p.m. A 10-week beginner class will be held Fridays with instructor Ralph Necessary, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. starting Jan. 17. Festival of Trees winners announced

The winners of the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley's Festival of Trees have been announced.

The "Spirit of the Season" award went to the Blue Ridge Alliance for Organ and Tissue Donation.

For charitable organizations the winners are: Salvation Army/Turning Point, People's Choice; and the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council, Children's Choice.

For noncharitable organizations, the winner is: Bell Atlantic/Telephone Pioneers of America, People's Choice and Children's Choice.

Series for children begins Jan. 18

Roanoke County Parks and Recreation will present the 1997 Winter Children's Series at the Brambleton Center. Puppets By Pizzazz will be held Jan. 18 at 10:30 a.m. Children's magician Mark Fuller will perform Feb. 1 at 10:30 a.m. Theatre IV will present "Thumbelina" Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Elks set date for Hoop Shoot

The Elks Hoop Shoot will be held at James Madison Middle School on Jan. 18. Boys will shoot at 9:30 a.m., and girls will shoot at 11 a.m. Age groups are 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13. The snow date is Jan. 25. Call John Engleby at 989-3991 or Tim Myers at 772-0181 for more information.

Museum seeks exhibit items

Carriages, sleighs and buggies are needed for the Virginia Museum of Transportation's "Harness, Hoofbeats, and Silver Bells" exhibition. The exhibit will be displayed from Saturday through Feb. 28.

The museum would like to borrow restored, nonfarm, horse-drawn vehicles as well as publications, artifacts or equipment relating to American carriage manufacture, craftsmanship and travel from 1850 to the 1930s.

Hotline helps with college aid

The Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, in cooperation with Crestar Bank, is sponsoring a free Financial Aid Hotline for those needing information about financial help for postsecondary education.

"Access the Answers" will be manned by volunteers on Jan. 14-16 and 21-23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The toll-free number is (800) 552-3006.

AARP sponsors mature driving classes

In cooperation with Central Fidelity Bank, the American Association of Retired Persons is sponsoring "55 Alive Mature Driving Classes" in January.

Classes will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 14 and 15 at The Park-Oak Grove Retirement Community on Woodmar Drive S.W., and on Jan. 21 and 22 at Friendship Manor Retirement Community on Hershberger Road N.W.
