BLACKSBURG STARTS PLANS FOR 200TH BIRTHDAY

The town turns 199 Monday. That day, in 1798, a Virginia General Assembly act established Blacksburg on 383/4 acres, the town's original 16 squares.

Monday also marks one year from the start of the town's bicentennial celebration, planning for which begins in full force at 7 p.m. Monday in the Police Department training room.

The meeting is open to the public. Assistant Town Manager Bonnie Svrcek said the town's Bicentennial Committee is looking for volunteers.
