Video rental stores face investigation

The U.S. Labor Department said Friday its Wage and Hour Division will investigate video rental stores throughout Southwest Virginia and West Virginia to see if they are complying with minimum wage and overtime laws.

The probe, to begin Monday, will concentrate on independently owned video stores. Specific stores were not mentioned in the announcement.

The Fair Labor Standards Act generally requires employers to pay the new minimum wage of $4.75 an hour and overtime at 11/2 times the hourly rate after 40 hours. They must make sure any 14-or 15-year-old employees are working in compliance with child labor laws.

Employers or employees with questions about the law should call the Wage and Hour Division in Charleston, W.Va., at (304) 347-5206.
