The Roanoke Times won 12 awards in the Virginia Press Association's annual newspaper contest.
Staff writer Laurence Hammack's series about the juvenile justice system took first place in the investigative or in-depth category.
Megan Schnabel earned a second-place award in column writing, for her Marketplace column that runs in each Wednesday's paper. The newspaper's reporting staff also won second place for its coverage of a fatal fire last January that killed four children and their grandmother.
Four photographers won awards. Eric Brady won second place in the sports photo category for his picture of a group of VMI cadets taunting a Marshall University player during a basketball game. Roger Hart won third place in the sports category for his picture at a jousting tournament. Wayne Deel took third for his spot news photo of a police officer chasing a suspect. Don Petersen won a third place award in the pictorial photo category for his images of a window shopper on a rainy day.
The newspaper won second place in the excellence of general makeup, an award given for the overall appearance of the paper.
Copy editor Peggy Bier and design desk editor Marty Horne worked together for their third place in the business and financial or agriculture page design. The sports staff also teamed up to earn third place for excellence of sports pages.
Alan Sorenson, Roanoke Times editorial page editor, won third place for his editorial writing. Geoff Semans and Betty Strother won second prize for editorial page design.
The awards were presented Saturday at the group's annual meeting held at The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center.
Roanoke Times photographers also won awards Friday in the Virginia News Photographers Association's annual photo competition. They were: Alan Kim and Deel, honorable mention for spot news; Deel, second for feature; Hart, honorable mention for sports action; Hart, first for lifestyle; Deel and Stephanie Klein-Davis, honorable mention for lifestyle; and Petersen, third for pictorial.
In a third competition, for Associated Press state photographer of the year, Petersen placed second.
In other categories Saturday:
* Norfolk Virginian-Pilot columnist Guy Friddell and Charles McDowell, a Richmond Times-Dispatch political reporter and columnist who got his start in Roanoke, received the VPA's first Lifetime Achievement Awards.
* The W.S. Copeland Award for journalistic integrity and public service went to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The following best-in-show prizes were awarded:
* The Guy Friddell Award for Daily Writing: the staff of the Richmond Times-Dispatch for a seven-month package of stories on Philip Morris focusing on Richmond's largest private employer, in the wake of allegations that the cigarette maker manipulated nicotine levels to keep cigarette smokers ``hooked.''
* Non-daily writing: Suzanne Pahl Tate of The Coalfield Progress in Norton for a nine-part series on teen-age pregnancy, published in late 1995.
* Daily photography: Martin Smith-Rodden of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk for ``Robert, Roberta,'' a picture story on gender reassignment.
* Non-daily photography: Brian Hoffman of the Salem Times-Register for ``Safe at home,'' a picture of a close play at home plate.
* Daily artwork: Robert Voros of The Virginian-Pilot for a graphic about the Virginia Marine Science Museum.
* Daily news presentation: The Virginian-Pilot.
