ANDREWS, Da vid Aubrey, 56, of Route 1, Big Island, died Sunday, January 12, 1997, in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on April 9, 1940, a son of the late Roy Lee Andrews and Ellen Viola Bowyer Andrews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Andrews. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church. David is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Elsie G. Andrews; a devoted daughter and son-in-law, Cortrina A. and Sherman D. Johnson Jr. of Bedford; a loving granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Johnson of Bedford; two brothers, William Andrews of Roanoke and Warren Andrews of Bedford; four sisters, Lelia A. Moss of Bedford, Dora A. Mays and Kathy A. Orange of Forest and Carlieen A. Tyree of Monroe. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997, at Hunting Creek Baptist Church, with Dr. Benjamin R. Owen and the Rev. William H. Steele officiating. AUSTIN, Madge Caldwell, 81, of Fincastle, died Sunday, January 12, 1997. She was a longtime member of Fincastle Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Lusby (Preacher) Austin, one son, Jerry Austin, and one grandchild, Debra Lynn Austin Hobson. She is survived by one son, Calvin Austin of Fincastle; two sisters, Iren e Hickok of Roanoke, Mary Alice Harlow of Buchanan; one sister-in-law, Katherine Caldwell of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997, at the Rader Daleville Chapel, with the Interim Pastor of Fincastle Baptist Church, Rev. Eugene T. Burris, officiating. BAKER, Ella Creasy, 88, of Salem, died Sunday, January 12, 1997. Born in Montgomery County, she had been a Salem resident for over 70 years. She retired Roanoke County Public Schools, and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church i n Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin E. Baker; a son, Lawrence T. (``Buddy"") Baker, and a daughter, Ruth B. Jarvis. Survivors include a grandson, Larry W. Jarvis and his wife, Celia E. Jarvis; great-grandchildren, Amanda L. and Andrew W. Jarvis, all of Crozier, and nieces, Linda Geiger of Salem and Betty Hillsinger of Grifton, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, in the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. Stuart R. Carlton and the Rev. Ira Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. BRANDES, John Del, 60, of Roanoke, died Saturday, January 11, 1997. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Mr. Brandes was an accounts clerk with Norfolk Southern Railway for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Patricia Brandes of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and James Barnett of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Shaun, Nathan and J. J.; one sister, and one brother. Funeral services will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Churc h at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with Pastor John Hartwig officiating. Interment will be private. CROCKETT, Lottie Neighbors, 88, of Salem, died Saturday, January 11, 1997. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Calvin and Cathy Neighbors, Douglas and Ivy Neighbors, and Daniel Neighbors, all of Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Buddy Obenchain of Salem, Hazel and Melvin Ryder of Moneta, Marie and David Guilliams of Garden City, Betty Lou and Roy Stroop of Roanoke, and Evelyn and Buck Deel of Blue Ridge; 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Abraham Horsley and Landon Horsley, both of Roanoke, Robert Horsley of Texas and Marion Horsley of Florida, and a sister, Sylvia Davis of Roanoke. DIVERS, Woodrow Wilson, 83, of Hardy, passed away Sunday, January 12, 1997, at his residence. He was a retired, self-employed truck driver. Survivors include his wife, Goldie Hypes Divers; one son and daughter-in-law, David Wayne and Deborah S. Divers of Hardy; one grandson, Anthony Wayne Divers; one brother, Lewis Edgar Divers of Bedford, and one sister, Minnie Odessa DeBusk of Roanoke. FLETCHER, Carlton Judd, 66, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 11, 1997 at Lewis-Gale Hospita l. He was the son of the late Aurelis and Mary Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher was born on April 5, 1930 in Orange, Va. He was retired from Catawba Hospital, with 34 years of service as a State employee. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Fletcher, Richard Fletcher, Alfred Fletcher and Elmer Fletcher, two sisters, Violet Scott and Cora Clark. Survivors include his wife, Lois Collins Fletcher; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Fletcher and Kevin Edward Martin; grandson, Zachary Jeb Martin, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Dorothy Dobyns, Gladys Scott; brother, Wilson Fletcher, all of Orange, Va.; several nieces, nephews, special friends and good neighbors. HORNE, C. Hubert, of Christiansburg, entered into the eternal life of perfect service with his Heavenly Father Sunday morning, January 12, 1997 from his residence. He was eight days short of his 74th birthday, having been born January 20, 1923. He became associated with Richardson & Company, Funeral Directors (now Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, Inc.) in Christiansburg in 1940 and at the time of his death was Chairman of the Board of the Corporation. After service in the U. S. Army Air Corp during World War II, he graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming and resumed his profession as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He served the people unselfishly of his time, talents and resources to those in need, regardless of their station in life. As an anonymous benefactor, he was responsible for the formal education of a number of area young people and for many years, provided food and warmth to scores of persons in need, especially children and without recognition. He was a member of the National, Virginia and Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Associations, was a past President of the Southwest Virginia Funeral Directors Association and a member of National Selected Morticians. In 1995 he was honored by the Virginia Funeral Directors Association with their ``Golden Licensee"" Award for having been licensed to practice in the Commonwealth for over 50 years. He was a Charter Member (1947) of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad and served several years as the squad's second Captain. He also served the squad as President and, at the time of his death, was a Life Member with almost fifty years total service. Hubert was a past president of the Christiansburg Lions Club, a member of McDaniel Lodge #86,

A.F. & A.M., Taylor Royal Arch Chapter #70, the Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and had served as Chairman of the local United Way. For over a decade he served on the Governor's Highway Safety Commission and for many years was Safety Advisor to the New Altamont Hospital in Christiansburg. He also served on bank and corporate boards of directors, was a longtime member of the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church and was ordained as Deacon there in 1958. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Louise Slusher Horne; one son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Richard H. ``Dick"" and Pat Horne, Christiansburg; one granddaughter, Heather Leveta Horne, Blacksburg; a grandson and his wife, Brian R. H. and Terri E. Z. Horne, Christiansburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Harry R. Stone, Spokane, WA. (formerly of Roanoke); a sister-in-law, Ernestine C. Slusher, Christiansburg. The funeral will be Wednesday, January 15, 1997, at 12 noon from the St. Paul United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Douglas W. Kanney. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. JACOBS, Jennie Baker, 103, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 11, 1997. Mrs. Jacobs was preceded in death by her sons, Fred, Andrew, Harry, Philip, Albert and George Jacobs, and her daughter, Marguerite Jacobs, and was the widow of Nicholas S. Jacobs. Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Jack and Dor is Jacobs of Salem and Nicholas Jacobs of Roanoke; her daughter, Beatrice J. Cassell of Botetourt County; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel on Tuesday, January 14, at 10 a.m., with Father Larry Mulaney officiating. Interment will be in Saint Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. KNAPP, Fritzie Raymond, 70, of Roanoke, died at her home, Saturday, January 11, 1997. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Genesis Sunday School Class. Mrs. Knapp became a leading sales person with Britannia, having 27 years of service. Both a loving wife and mother, she is survived by her husband, Richard S. Knapp; her children, Katherine Snodgrass, Charleston, W. Va., Richard Raymond Knapp of Richmond; David Lee Knapp, Rocky Mount, and Patricia Knapp, Roanoke. Also Grandchildren, Jacqueline Knapp, Richmond, Katie Snodgrass, Richmond, Chad Snodgrass, Charleston, W.Va. and Misty Dawn Knapp, Rocky Mount. A funeral service will be conducted in the chapel at First Baptist Church 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997, with the Rev. John D. Cochran officiating. At a later date, her cremains will be taken to High Point, N.C. LANDEN, Anna Mulder, 76, of Wirtz, died Sunday, January 12, 1997, at her home. Born on January 28, 1920, she was a da ughter of the late Luke and Mary Emma Sumner Mulder. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph Landen, and a son, Bill Landen. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and George Hopkins of Wirtz; a son, Donald L. Landen of Miami, Fla.; four sisters, Eunice Abernathy and Cloye Jennings of Chesapeake, Leona Hill of Virginia Beach and Eula Janet Grissard of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997, at Hale's Ford Baptist Church, Wirtz, with the Rev. Melvin Harris officiating. McKINNEY, Iris Gordon, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 12, 1997. Mrs. McKinney was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Gilmore, and a son, Charles O. McKinney. STONE, James Crispin, Sr., 72, of Rocky Mount, passed away Saturday, January 11, 1997 at his home in the Sontag Community. He was a devoted and loving husband and father, born May 14, 1924, son of the late Crispin Clack and Julia Cooper Stone. He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Calvin Mattox, Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Wilda Foster Stone, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, James, Jr. (Jimmy) and Linda Stone of Roanoke; six daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Kay and Morris Ledbetter of Ferrum, Julia and J. T. SUTHERLAND, Henry Burns, 87, of Clintwood, died Sunday, January 12, 1997 in Waco, Texas. He was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County and was a member of Peuther Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He was a member of the Clintwood Kiwanis Club, and Clintwood Masonic Lodge #66 A.F. & A.M. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Carty Sutherland. Surviving are his daughter, Rita Purdy, her husband Jim; grandsons, Jay and Jonathan, of Waco, Texas; grandson, David Purdy and his wife, Kristi, Alexandria; four brothers, Woodrow Sutherland and Brady Sutherland, both of Abingdon, Boone Sutherland and Fonso Sutherland, both of Haysi; three sisters, Helen Owens and Gladys Sutherland, Haysi, Jackie Keene, Oakwood, Va. Funeral services for Henry Burns Sutherland will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, January 16, 1997, at the Peuther Chapel Church, with Joe Glenn Sluss, Minister, officiating. THOMAS, Glenna Jones, (``Totsy"") 82, of Roanoke, died Sunday, January 12, 1997 in a local hospital. She was born in Lynchburg, Va. on October 25, 1914, the daughter of the late David and Anna Belle Jones and was a lifelong resident of Virginia. She was the widow of Charles O. Thomas. She was a retired Registered Nurse from Shenandoah Ho spital and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Her survivors include two nephews, Berkeley Jones, Jr. and David Jones of California; cousins and other dear relatives and friends. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 1997 at Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Revs. Robert and Dusty Fiedler officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's South Chapel.

WARTH, NaVera Mae, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, Januaary 12, 1997. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

WATSON, Dr. John C., 83, of Alexandria, a retired Cardiologist, died Saturday, January 11, 1997 of heart failure in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit he established at Alexandria Hospital 30 years ago. During many years of private practice of cardiology and internal medicine in Alexandria, Dr. Watson served as president of the Virginia State Board of Medical Examiners, the Alexandria Medical Society, the Norther Virginia Academy of Internal Medicine, the Virginia Heart Association and the Alexandria Hospital medical staff. He was chief of medicine at Alexandria Hospital and the former Circle Terrace Hospital in Alexandria. As chairman of the coronary care unit at Alexandria Hospital, he was instrumental in establishing its pioneering cardiac intensive care unit in 1967. Dr. Watson also was chairman of the Alexandria Hospital's Board of Directors and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the honorary medical fraternity. Dr. Watson was born in 1913 in Salem, Va., at the Mount Regis Sanitorium, which his father , Dr. Everett C. Watson, a noted tuberculosis specialist, had founded and headed. He grew up in Salem and graduated from William and Mary College. He earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia in 1937 and underwent postgraduate training at the New York Polyclinic Medical School and Hospital and the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. After being a resident physician at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem, Va., he served as a captain with the U. S. Army's Medical College of Virginia unit in Italy and North Africa during World War II. After the war, he settled in Alexandria. He retired in 1983. Licensed as a private pilot, he enjoyed flying, boating and skeet shooting. He was a member of the Northern Virginia Power Squadron, Rotary International and the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club. He also was an Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alexandria. Survivors are his wife, the former Mary Brown, of Alexandria; two daughters, Cara Watson Byrne of Seattle, Wash. and Mary Randolph Watson Ventura of Alexandria; and three grandchildren. Friends may call at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 West Braddock Road, Alexandria, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, January 13. The funeral will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2701 Cameron Mills Rd., Alexandria, at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997.
