Four years after serving as a teaching assistant in Roanoke City Schools, Amanda Orfield was ready to move into her own classroom - and she knew what she was getting into.
Orfield is in her third year as a teacher at Roanoke's Morningside Elementary, and unlike some novice teachers, she's found the job better than she expected.
"Even though I was a teaching assistant, I didn't realize how much impact a teacher has on a kid's life," she said. "The main thing I've learned is that you can't have one blueprint for learning for all the kids. Every one of them is different."
Orfield said her goal is to make sure all the children in her classroom succeed in some way. "I know they can - everyone has something that they're good at," she said.
A graduate of Roanoke's Patrick Henry High School and Longwood College, Orfield plans to pursue a master's degree at the University of Virginia. She enjoys sewing, reading and walking.
