HIGH SCHOOL TEENS TEACH FOURTH-GRADERS ABOUT TOBACCO

Several members of Teens Need Teens from Christiansburg High School led a group of fourth-graders through a tobacco awareness program recently. The program includes lesson plans that demonstrate the effects of tobacco use. Activities included body mapping, where the children identified the parts of the human body that are affected by smoking; watching a video about smoking; and looking at print advertising and deciding what the ads were really trying to sell. The fourth-graders were also given a pre- and post-course test about the effects of smoking.

As part of the program, TNT members were evaluated on their presentation by the classroom teachers. The students all received excellent ratings. The names of students who participated in the program, along with the classroom and school they visited, is listed below:

* Ms. Clements' class at Bethel Elementary School: Traci Barr, Jennifer Clark and Josh Bradley.

* Ms. Hudson's class at Bethel Elementary: Jenni Beller, Karen Cox and Rachel Walden.

* Mrs. Johnson's class at Belview Elementary: Nathan Brewbaker, Jay Clark and Chad Danner.

The Health Occupation Students of America Club at Christiansburg High School collected approximately 100 items for the Angel Tree program. The items were collected in December and were donated to the Montgomery County Christmas Store. Students, faculty and staff participated.

The club's bloodmobile was also successful. The American Red Cross collected 44 pints of blood during its visit to the high school in December. HOSA is an integrated part of the health occupations class, which is offered for students who plan to pursue careers in the medical field.
