The value of Roanoke Valley building permits fell to a two-year low in December: $5.8 million, the lowest monthly total since $5.2 million in December 1994. Roanoke issued 135 permits for $1.97 million, Roanoke County issued 117 for $2.56 million, and Salem issued 34 for $1.35 million.
Roanoke County allowed construction of 30 homes; Roanoke's permits were primarily for alterations; Salem issued an $800,000 permit to the city government to remodel the former School Board building.
