BARRETT, Claude W., 79, of Hillsville, passed away Sunday, January 12, 1997, in the Laurel Meadows Home. He was born July 25, 1917 in Carroll County. Surviving are his wife, Launia W. Barrett; daughters and sons-in-law, Marie Horton, Hillsville, Phyllis and Elden Horton, Hillsville, Mary and Ralph McKnight, Independence; son and daughter-in-law, David and Rejeana Barrett, Hillsville; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Mr. Barrett was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Barrett. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 15, 1997, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Elder Joe H. McGrady officiating. Interment will be in Dalton Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville.

BURRITT, Magalene, of Roanoke County, died Sunday, January 5, 1997. Private graveside services were held. Arrangements were by Lotz Salem Chapel.

CHATTIN, Lewis Edward, (``Ed""), also known as Taz, 66, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 12, 1997. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church for many years and was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a well known professional painter for many years in the Roanoke Valley. He was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Annie Chattin; a brother, Bobby Chattin; and a sister, Ila Atkins. Survivors include his beloved wife, Lillian; and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Billy McKee; stepsons and their wives, Donald and Sandi Eakin, Johnny and Jean Eakin; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters and their husbands, Colleen and Melvin Booth, Shirley and Donnie Etue all of Roanoke; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 1997 with the Rev. Carter L. Sloan and the Rev. Gene Arnold officiating. Burial with military honors by VFW Post 1264 will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. He will be deeply missed by all. Our thanks to the VA Medical Center and the Veterans Care Center for their care during his illness. COUSSER, Karen Cynthia, 34, of Roanoke, passed on Sunday, January 12, 1997. She was a member of the Valley Word Ministries and was a graduate of William Fleming High School, Class of '81. She is survived by her daughter, Samantha Lynn Cousser, Roanoke; her mother, Cordie Cousser, Roanoke; father, Charles Cousser Sr., Terre Haute, Ind.; two brothers, Charles (Linette) Cousser, Roanoke, Timothy Lee Cousser, Lynchburg; five sisters, Rosalene (Richard) Allen, Gaithersburg, Md., Charlene (Gerard) Hoosier, Cassandra (James) Berry, Brenda (Buddy) Stewart, Gloria Cousser, all of Roanoke; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. CUSTER, Claudine A., 69, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 12, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Custer. ERVIN, Dr. Carl S., 94, of Salem, passed away Sunday, January 12, 1997. Dr. Ervin practiced in Roanoke for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva M. Ervin; a son, Robert William Ervin. HERNDON, Robert Lee, 65, son of the late Ashby F. Herndon Sr. and Pauline Dellinder Herndon, died in Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Monday, January 13, 1997, after a long illness of multiple sclerosis and heart disease. He was a native of Luray, a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean conflict, and retired from Eli Lilly and Company. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one son, Marty, of Roanoke; one daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and David Clark and their daughter, Mary Lee, of Luray; one brother, Ashby Herndon Jr. of Verona; one sister, Nancy Good of Stuarts Draft; one aunt, Kathleen Myers of Woodstock; and a devoted friend, Steve Kennedy of Roanoke. A memorial service will be celebrated at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Salem, on Wednesday, January 15, at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends in St. Paul's Parish Hall following the service. THOMAS, Glenna Jones, (``Totsy"") 82, of Roanoke, died Sunday, January 12, 1997 in a local hospital. She was born in Lynchburg, Va. on October 25, 1914, the daughter of the late David and Anna Belle Jones and was a lifelong resident of Virginia. She was the widow of Charles O. Thomas. She was a retired Registered Nurse from Shenandoah Hospital and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Her survivors include two nephews, Berkeley Jones, Jr. and David Jones of California; cousins and other dear relatives and friends. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 1997 at Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Revs. Robert and Dusty Fiedler officiating. WALTON, Terrance Irene, 28, of Roanoke, passed on Thursday, January 9, 1997. She is survived by her father, Henry J. Walton, III, Pennsylvania, James Lee, North Carolina, Hildred Thomas, Roanoke, Michael Thomas, Connecticut, Darryl Nickerson, Maryland; seven sisters, Johnetta Casey, Barbara Worthy, both of Roanoke, Tracey Worthy, Delaware, Cynthia Dunbar, Washington, D.C., Hilda Walton, Missouri, Vera R. WEDDLE, William Harrison, 81, of Radford, passed away Sunday, January 12, 1997, at Carilion Radford Community Hospital. He was born September 17, 1915, son of John Chesley and Katherine Kirkwood Weddle. Mr. Weddle graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1938 with a degree in Civil Engineering, and received a commission as 2nd Lt,. Corp of Engineers, U.S. Army Reserves. He was ordered to active duty and served with the 5th Engineers Combat Regiment in Iceland from 1941 to 1943. He returned to the United States and assumed command of the 1297 Engineer Combat Battalion and later the 1285 Engineer Combat Battalion, which was to serve in England, France and Germany. He was promoted to Lt. Col. while in Germany. Upon returning to the United States at the end of World War II he assumed the Presidency of Central Lumber Company and held that position until retirement in 1981. Mr. Weddle was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Sons of the Confederate Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Weddle is survived by his wife, Helen Smith Weddle; sons, William H. Weddle Jr., Robert L. Weddle, and George T. Tipton Jr.; daughters-in-law, Jeannie Weddle and Toni Tipton; grandch ildren, William H. Weddle III, B. J. Tipton, George Tipton III, Kristina Meecham, and Patrick Howard; and a great-grandchild, Aaron Tipton. He is also survived by a sister, Margaret Pratt. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 15, 1997, at 2 p.m. at Sunrise Burial Park in Radford with the Rev. Jim Workman officiating. WILSON, Clarence William, 89, of Radford, passed away Sunday, January 12, 1997, at Carilion Radford Community Hospital. He was a retired custodian for the City of Radford. Survivors include his wife, Edith H. Wilson; one daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Annalee) Szerokman of Radford; two sons, Colen E. Wilson of Radford, and Douglas S. Wilson of Pulaski; one sister, Mary Long of Blacksburg; t wo grandsons, Andrew William and John Michael Szerokman.
