*The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will wait before deciding the future of a highway bridge near Elliston-Lafayette Elementary School. The bridge will be obsolete when a project to relocate U.S. 11/460's eastbound lanes is completed this spring. The county is considering options to renovate the bridge for pedestrians by repairing the existing structure or demolishing it and building a new footbridge.
Renovation may cost more than $100,000 and the supervisors delayed voting on demolition or renovation Monday while state Sen. Madison Marye, D-Shawsville, tries to get more state money to defray local costs. The most expensive part of renovating the bridge may be removing its lead-based paint, which is estimated to cost around $70,000.
The supervisors also voted to advertise for a new county economic development director to replace Don Moore, who announced his resignation last week. The position will be upgraded to full-time status when a new director is hired. That search will be conducted while the county also looks for a new county administrator to replace Betty S. Thomas, who is retiring at the end of March. The board will meet Thursday in executive session to continue reviewing applications for county administrator.
