WORK ON CARE HOME STARTS SOON

RIDGEWOOD MANOR will have studio and one-bedroom units and some companion suites.

A 74-unit assisted-living residential community should be under construction by early next month in Salem, its developers announced Tuesday.

Ridgewood Manor will be a $5.2 million project with Williamsburg-style architecture. It will consist of studio and one-bedroom units and some companion suites in a 52,000-square-foot complex, said Pam Ursoy, spokeswoman for Liberty Premier LLC.

The terrace level of the building has been designed for residents who have progressive illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease, Ursoy said.

The area will include an enclosed courtyard and a covered patio so residents can go outside, but in a secure area, she said.

The site is 4.7 acres on a knoll across Virginia 419 from Columbia Lewis-Gale Medical Center and next to Ridgewood Farms Shopping Center.

Ursoy said she and Frank Peck will manage the facility for developer Smith/Packett Med-Com Inc.

Thor Inc. has been hired as general contractor, and Barrows Inc. will provide interior design and furnishings.

A groundbreaking for the project is planned for Jan.29 with completion expected by early 1998.

Smith/Packett also is developing a nursing home and assisted living community off U.S. 220 South in Roanoke. That facility will include space for residents of Roanoke City's Coyner Springs Nursing Home in Botetourt County, which will close when the new one is completed on land behind Wal-Mart at Hunting Hills Shopping Center.

Smith/Packett was formed in 1983 by its president, Jim Smith, a Roanoke native. The company owns and operates 27 nursing homes, in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Arkansas. The company has offices on Brambleton Avenue Southwest.
