BOOTH CABLE FIRM SOLD

Blacksburg's 13,000 cable television customers might soon be getting their MTV someplace else.

Last month, Booth Communications announced the sale of various cable television systems to Adelphia Communications Corp., the nation's seventh largest cable television franchise.

In Southwest Virginia, the sale affects those in Blacksburg and 15,000 customers in Salem. Pending approval of the governing bodies, the name Adelphia Cable Communications could be appearing on cable bills by April. The sale isn't final until March 31. Tuesday night Blacksburg Town Council set a public hearing on the transfer of the franchise from Booth Communications of Virginia Inc. to Adelphia Communications Corp., for Feb. 11.

Adelphia Cable's regional manager Joe Price said if the transfer is approved, the name would probably be the only significant change. Booth's staff is expected to be retained.

"We recognize the fine service provided to these areas by Booth Communications and Adelphia will continue in that vein while looking to enhance services offered."

Pennsylvania-based Adelphia's cable systems are in 15 states, serving about 1.85 million customers, mostly in the eastern United States, from Florida to Vermont. The company operates the cable franchise in Dublin, Pulaski and Pulaski County and a regional office in Staunton, which serves more than 200,000 subscribers from Winchester to Grundy to Elizabeth City, N.C.
