Armenian Prime Minister Armen Sarkissian and his Cabinet toured the United States this week in the typical manner of developing country officials looking for financing, making stops at the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and Wall Street.
After seven years of war with Azerbaijan and the rupturing of the Soviet Union's old centralized infrastructure, Armenia doesn't have much going for it. The transportation grid is obsolete, and officials say the national telephone utility is in dire need of an upgrade. While in the U.S., the delegation of ministers mounted an urgent search for engineering firms to build and operate new power plants.
Yet when it comes to cyberspace, Armenia is on the cutting edge. For a country the size of Maryland, the embassy's home page provides access to three different Armenian news agencies, all in English, indexed and searchable. It offers a glimpse of the country as it hopes investors will see it one day.
