"The History of the Model-T Ford" will be the subject of a lecture by Robert Hudson on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Salem Public Library community room.

The talk is part of the monthly meeting of the Salem Historical Society.

Hudson is a retired physics professor at Roanoke College.

'Life with Father' auditions planned

Auditions for the musical "Life with Father" will be held Sunday from 1 until 5 p.m. in Virginia Western Community College's Whitman Auditorium.

Singers, dancers and actors of all ages are needed.

Those auditioning should be prepared to sing, read from the script and learn a simple choreographed routine.

Genealogical group plans talk

Vicie "Babe" Fowler will speak on "Gleanings of Personal Property and Land Tax Records" Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Brody Room of the Roanoke Public Library's downtown branch in Elmwood Park.

The program, sponsored by the Southwestern Virginia Genealogical Society, will teach researchers to use tax records to track down relatives.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Sewing show in Greensboro

The "Original Sewing and Craft Expo" will be held Feb. 13-15 at the Holiday Inn Four Seasons Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C.

The show will offer exhibits, a retail shopping area and more than 200 classes, seminars and workshops.

The focus will be on sewing, quilting, needlework and crafts.

The show is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the cost is $6. Classes cost $14, or $12 each for three or more. Advance registration is suggested.

March to honor Martin Luther King

A "March for Justice" to honor the memory of slain civil right leader the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held Monday at noon in downtown Roanoke.

The march will begin at the Poff Federal Building and follow Third Street, Norfolk Avenue and Fifth Street to St. Paul United Methodist Church. A service will be held at the church at 1 p.m.

The guest speaker at the event will be Barbara Patterson, and the Patrick Henry High School Pride and William Fleming High School Gospel Choir will perform.

In addition, a number of local achievement awards will be presented.

Kandinsky Trio to perform Feb. 1

The Kandinsky Trio will perform "Tales of Appalachia" Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. in Roanoke College's Olin Theater.

The program will feature a mountain story told by Connie Regan-Blake and music written by Grammy winner Mike Reid. Dvorak's Trio in E Minor, Op. 90, "The Dumky," will also be performed.

Apollo 13 astronaut to speak

Ken Mattingly, one of the astronauts who took part in the space mission made famous by the movie "Apollo 13," will speak in Lynchburg College's Hall Campus Center ballroom on Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

The lecture, "The Real Story Behind Apollo 13," is free to the public.

Square dance lessons planned

A western square dancing class will be offered Friday nights from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Preston Park Recreation Center beginning Jan. 24.

The 10-week beginner class is available to couples only, and the cost is $30 per person.

Essay contest entries sought

The Roanoke Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will sponsor an essay contest on the influence of black history and culture.

The contest will take place Feb.1-28, and is open to students in third through eighth grades. The winner from each grade level will receive a prize and a plaque.

'Structures' show to open Jan. 25

A new exhibit exploring the relationship between engineering and architecture will be featured at the Virginia Museum of Transportation Jan. 25 through April 5.

The exhibit, called "Structures," will focus on bridge construction. It was created by the Franklin Institute Science Museum and has appeared in cities around the world.

Visitors will be able to learn about basic engineering principles through models, graphics, photos and drawings. Workshops, lectures and a bus tour are also planned.

Arbor Day Foundation offer
